Default Shaving with a Straight Razor... again. Carl Melcher Solingen

    Hello,
My Name is Alex and I am from Germany. 3 years ago I started shaving with a straight but I could not get a sharp edge on my Dovo Inox razor and I stoped doing that.

Yesterday I was at a flewmarket and an Old guy was selling his collection of straight razors. I asked him which of em all shaves the best and he sold me that one on my pictures. It is an old straight razor Carl Melcher from Solingen about 6/8 with a round tip I got it for 15€ After a refreshing little hone this Razor shaved like a dream and I am very impressed of how sharp those things can get.

    My Questions:

-Does anyone know anything about this razor`? or Carl Melcher?

-This Steelish "thing which keeps the blade safe while not in use" is a little to heavy for my taste and does not fit the rest of the picture in my opinion. Can I change this to a wodden part? or anything else? what would fit the best?

-As you see on the photos, I took, there are some black spots on the razor. they seem to bee some microns deep. pittings??? Can I make this razor shine like new again?

Greetings from Germany and thanks for your help in advance

    sorry for my imperfect english

The steelish part is called the scales, or handles. The razor can be removed from the scales and new ones can be crafted. This can be wood, horn, bone, acrylic, micarta, or other material.

The razor itself can be cleaned up. If there are pits then you'd have to sand away enough metal to even it out to fully remove them; personally I'd just clean it up and use it as-is from the pictures.

Check out our gallery for some images of restored razors. You'll get a good idea as to what the various scale materials look like.
