I'm in a pickle

Howdy all,

So I have quite the brain buster here that I'd like some input in.

As some of you know I bought a grelot a month or so ago and fell in love with it. Since I bought it it has been my exclusive shaver.

I spoke to a vendor about getting a grelot with an ivory handle in the future but the price they quoted me was a bit steep.

To be able to buy the razor I would have to save up for a month or so, but i was informed that if I do wait that long there might not be any grelot blades left in the type I want.

Now what would you members do? Would you put yourselves in the red alittle an purchase the razor? Or would you wait it out and hope for the best and that they still have that blade available?

I'd go into the red. I'm useless with money.

I would wait...There are other things that are much more important in life to go into debt for.

As SRP's Maximiian once reminded me, "That razor you have your heart set on is not the only one in the world. There will always be another beautiful razor that comes along that you can't live without."

Remember too if the vendor runs out of that specific TI razor you will most likely be able to purchase that TI Grelot w/ ivory scales in the secondary market from somebody one day in the near future who bought it and didn't like it.

If you KNOW that you can pay off the debt, I'd definitely go into the red. Money can be made, but when you find the blade that fits your want, it won't last. I'd take the blade and pay it off, rather than take the gamble and pay for it..

But I, too, am hopeless with money :p

If you can afford it, do it; if not, don't. Only you can judge that. But remember, while there is a chance they'll all be gone, there is also a chance they'll still be available. Even if they do all sell, you may be able to pick one up second hand at some point. And besides, you already have one...

I am very tempted to go in the red on it.

But I know I shouldn't since I'm saving for a wedding and going to Europe in a few weeks time.


As for the post by holli I actually have 2 now. I just ordered a rams horn grelot over the weekend.

If I had known they wouldn't be around much longer I would have bought the ivory one and left the rams until a later date.

My plan was to have these three blades and sell everything else off and just have my little three day mismatch set:p

Once you get it, the need becomes satisfied and another will be generated...I think so anyway. They aren't going anywhere - TI custom make ivory handles out of Pre-ban ivory, Steve at the Invisible Edge can organise it for you.

If the money needed for the razor will compromise your ability to feed yourself or anyone dependant upon you, forget it. Otherwise...oblige yourself!

Don't do it. If you go in the red for a razor, then you will be able to justify going in the red for anything else. Debt is a monkey that you cannot get off your back easy.

Agreed. I can't justify it that's why it's such a struggle.

But I'm sure we all have that Grail razor we just want badly.

I love my razors but, personally, I'd rather have spending money in Europe. I've only been twice, whereas I can always buy razors.

What a pickle indeed! So far the advice is pretty much an even split. I suppose you'll just have to flip a coin?

I've found if there is something I'm really chomping at the bit to acquire but I can't afford it I just put it out of my mind for a spell and it just seems to disappear and then I can't figure out what was so special about it in the first place.

So if you can't afford it skip it.

Yes this would be my wedding. Originally this was the razor I wanted to get to shave with on my wedding day.

I purchased a grelot in bone to replace the idea of an ivory razor. But the idea of a ivory razor for my wedding just keeps popping back into my head again and again.

So as you say out of sight out of mind I guess it doesn't really work for me. It's always in the back of my head!

Hmmm here's a thought: don't buy it and save the cash for potential antique store finds and other shaving related items in Europe!

Edit: Btw, if you call that a pickle, wait till the hones hit you like a tonne of bricks!

Well first, congrats in advance. :) If it weren't for the pictures I probably wouldn't remember what color suit I had on, let alone what I shaved with.

Hopefully you'll get some razor-spendin' money for the ceremony, although I'd still opt to spend that money for the traveling.

Lol I've been hit by AD' of all kinds.

Right now it's my grelot AD and a coti combo AD

I'm actually trying to sell off a few of my razors and other hones so I can get a nice combo stone and another grelot or two.

I've seen a few nice combo stones on the classifieds but I keep seeing them too late and then they are sold!

I'll be in Europe at the end of august but my wedding won't be for another year or so.

So for now I'm saving for Europe but when I get back the razor spending is gonna have to drop big time so I can save for the wedding and possibly a house downpayment.

to be honest I'd go for it an go in the red , thats just me but that would be unwise , the best thing would be to wait until you have funds on hand , alot can happen while waiting and you may just change your mind or find something different that takes your fancy

I might just end up wanting a complete custom from one of the many custom razor makers we have.

For me it would depend how much I was going into the red for it, and for how long. £20 for a day or two Ok, £200 for a month or two not so much..!

Only you can make the call on affordability, but with a wedding coming up and the trip to Europe I'd personally save the pennies for that. As Scipio says, Steve at TIE can sort you out pretty much anything from TI so you always have the option of getting the razor later. And even if not new, then second hand from another source.

You're only going to make one trip to Europe, so make sure you have the cash to do what you want there..! Besides which, you might be out antiquing in Europe somewhere and stumble across a NOS Filly or DD or something, and then you'll have the cash there to snag it.

JMHO of course, but thats what I'd do!

I'm in the middle of moving house at the moment and I havent bought a razor in weeks. I want the cash for the move and to make sure that I have the money to pay all the fees and stuff, plus furnish the new place when we move in. I keep seeing great razors on eBay going for really good prices, but I'm holding off because there will always be more razors out there.

Personally i wouldn't buy unless i can afford it.
Now think it this way: save the money for your wedding trip. You never know what you might find here. A razor you can't even imagine yet. Or something for you wife. We have still plenty razors on flea market and antique shops. We have no such straight razor hype either. Prices can be really really reasonable.

I do understand about finding a razor you like and wanting to go for it even if it is out of the budget. Like others stated you may find another razor you like better, the razor may still be in stock and you may be able to find one for sale used later. As you are in Toronto I would suggest coming to our straight razor meet in a few weeks. It runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. Lots of options for staying the night or two. Lots of razors to see/try, honing lessons and lots of hones to try and maybe some restoration work.
