I don't think there is any objective way to measure this, so "yes" and "no" are both equally correct answers.

No. They aren't. I'd just search "solingen razor" on ebay and buy another brand that is in great shape for less money when you see one you really like. For example I got an absolutely untouched mint condition 7/8 ATOR in it's box (also in mint condition) for $85, and it looks and shaves like a dream.
Of course they're better, There's two little ducks on it.....Cmon'
That's exactly my point. I don't think any one particular brand from the vintage days of Solingen is head and shoulders above the rest, or, more accurately in my opinion, given my experience with many; they are all as great as each other. Saying that, I have not tried a Duck and don't intend to for those prices either. Frankly they don't do alot for me aesthetically and I think its crazy that they go for such fortunes, or certainly in excess of $200 dollars a piece in good condition. To me the justice just is not there.
But then again, we all like different things and I'm not knocking anyone for wanting a Duck. It just annoys me that every time I see one (or a Filarmonica) on the bay, with ages left for that matter, they are always sky high.
I get the feeling that the majority of the time it is people who aren't well informed on them and have a greatly distorted opinion of them.
I mean really, the guys that really know their razors spend all their money on hones, surely? I'm all about the rocks! It's not the razor, its how well you can hone it!
It's not that you can say brand x is better than brand y because as you go from razor to razor there are variations within the brand. You could pick up a no name razor that is outstanding and a TI that shaves terrible. There are just differences within the manufacturing process and in the consistancy from sample to sample. I think with some of the brands like DD or Puma the razors just seem to be consistantly great and they hone up pretty easy and straightforward so it's the right combination of factors that's sets these razors apart and it's why they are in demand.
However that doesn't mean you can't find plenty of great razors out there for a song that are lessor known.
hi guys thanks for the replies. I think ebay might be my only option. sucks living in australia not much in razors here.
