Hi,
Which French old straight razor manufacturers are you aware of? Thanks.
There was a brand called "Lura", not sure of the spelling than someone showed on this site some time ago. I have been looking for one of these razors but have not been able to locate one.
Couvreux de Razout.
Trademark Le Grelot was used by P.Hospital & Cie Thiers.
Thiers-Issard.
This link posted by Neil Miller is useful. There seem to be hundreds and I'm never sure if they are retailers names stamped on the tang, or manufacturers.
Are they all razor manufacturers :)
In my limited sampling, my French blades have the retailer stamped on the front, but the manufacture did not stamp the rear.
Rameau à Sens was a manufacture. They appear to have made my "Gelle Aine & Cie" that I posted here. looks like Gelle Aine & Cie used to be Gelle Freres, and there are some of those razors elsewhere on here on SRP.
I have have a blade stamped "Radiante" and another as "Deuvert Freres". That blade is a very pretty wedge that I am looking forward to scaling.
Here is a googlebook link to a flyer of Gelle Aine & Cie that mentions used to be Gelle Freres.
Hi all and a Happy New Year !
To bring this threat alive again, I will show you some pics of a french 5/8'' bellied SR I got today.
It came aged and dirty. After some carefully clean up & honing I ended up with a nice & shaving sharp antique razor.
Unfortunately I cannot find out WHO made it.
It is made from a very good carbon steel, has brass pins and black bakelite scales, so I guess it was made from abt. 1910s to 1940s.
All googeling I did with variations of the possible make or brand was w/o any success...
I would be very happy if anyone has an idea WHO made this SR or what's the meaning of the partial readable script on the tang...!

I have a 'Famex', however I can't find out much about it

As you already may have seen, your FAMEX isn't of french orign, but "FABRIQUE D'ALLEMAGNE" in WALD-SOLINGEN.
The manufacturer of FAMEX was E.+F. HÖRSTER.
FAMEX razors sometimes came with the BAGPIPER signs on blades and scales, wich also was a trademark of E.+F. HÖRSTER.

My own FAMEX doesn't have a manufacturer's No. but shows the HAMON script on the scales, who imported FAMEX to France.

I've always suspected that this old wedge of mine was French, but I was never able to confirm anything. It's marked "Dastugue Castelnau".Attachment 86559

Paul, you're the owner of the very nice frameback, that was made by very strange maker.
Strangely is his location.:)
I've seen his razors before.
As we see on the stamp, the razor was made in Jougne in eastern France. But according all sources: books, newspapers, ads, the company of Adolphe Arbenz was in Birmingham, England at the end of 19th century.

I also have two other new untouched blades! I'd love to see yours as I've never seen another like mine... Yet!
Manah, as always thanks for your wealth of information. Do you have a date range on when these were produced?? By the condition of mine I wouldn't think it was earlier then 1950's but one never knows...
Paul
I promise when I find it I will post pics,Been searching for two hrs:( found the blades,no razor yet.
I too have an old razor I think is French. Only markings on it are "Cutrae Langres" -- I think -- and a Crown. It's a frameback with black scales that I think are wood, there's some grain to them, and the blade itself looks like Damascus steel. Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated.
No Luck yet on the Ivory but I found this one, sort of faux damascus (is etched),not sure it is french but it sounds like it,on the tang: fontenille #13,Le Mondaine,Depose on the other, scales look like black horn.

CanisiusHistGrad,
Welcome to SRP and I think it's better to begin a new thread about your razor with the razor and the stamp pictures.
pixelfixed, it's Le Mondain, 134 Fontenille Medailledor.
Yes, it's faux damascus and native German razor made by Carl Friedrich Ern.
Looking for info on Pigeard Nogent- Le- Rotrou*
