WM Elliot & Co.
I purchased a Wm Elliot & Co. razor and was trying to find more info but all I can find is...
"WM. ELLIOT & CO.
New York City.
ca. 1880-1907; in 1907, the firm was taken over by Adolph Strauss & Co., who continued using "Wm. Elliot & Co." as a trademark."
I have lots of questions.
New York? So this is an American made razor? or were they just importers?
How can I get a better idea of the date of this razor?
Did they change thier mark thoughout the years?
How long did Adolph Strauss use the mark? That might at least give me a final date. Can anyone give me an idea of the quality of WM Elliot & Co. razors and perhaps a general value? I'm not planning on selling it, just for my own curiosity.
I'm out of town, but will post a pic when I can.
Thanks for any help you can give me!! :)

Welcome to SRP.
I don't think, that William Elliot was American maker. Many of his razors were marked "Germany".
1880-1907 - when Wm.Elliot & Co. was in business.
But according Robert A.Doyle Price Guide, there were Wm.Elliot razors before 1860.
Adolph Strauss and Company was an import agency in NY.
They used Wm.Elliot & Co. trademark till 1918.
William Elliot razors are nice shavers.

Thanks for the info, I can assume then that this razor is pre- 1919?

According to a pocket knife forum, William Elliot was an importer, sourcing parts from all over - especially from the UK and Germany. Many of the early pocket knives bearing "Wm Elliot & Co Sheffield" appear to be of german type and construction. As Manah says, Strauss & Co acquired the mark in 1907 and continued using it until 1918.
Incidentally, Adolph Strauss & Co did not just import razors - they were also the american agents for Messner Harmonicas!

Neil
