They are bad enough to make the list: Brands of Straight Razors to avoid - Straight Razor Place Wiki
Kriegar, Timber Ratteler, Beauty & Barber, Zepk, 3T, Maxam
There are a lot more garbage out there trying to look like a razor
But this is some of the worst
The problem with them is the quality of the steel: Its so poor that the edges fail before they get shaving sharp.
Definately avoid!
They don't even make good box openers...
I can't figure this out. These company's obviously have the means of creating the so called "razor shaped object". What is standing between them and a servicable razor is investing a couple more dollars in better steel - so why not? It would still keep the price point very low.
No, the grinding, scales, rivets... the whole lot is fell, wretched rejectamenta. If you want a good laugh, invest the $9 to see what they call a "razor." Blade is way too narrow at the spine. badly ground, UGLY, and the scales... the scales are so think and heavy you'd think they belong on an implement for flipping steaks on your grill.
WOW-I knew they were bad but this is laughable,I saw all the junk there-the Zpak, and all the other pakistani crap,I just didn't know how bad these were, and they can be made to look nice in a picture, but I wasn't biting......
Thanks guys, for all that didnt know enough to stay away from this junk-I hope this was
enough to convince a friend of mine that thought they looked good.
Thanks
Griz
I bought one of these a while back from Amazon to learn how to hone with, and couldn't even do that. Now it sits on my desk at work to open mail with.
I think the best way to describe them would be "thick, oversized, heavy folding knives", certainly not something you would want on your face.
I noticed on Ebay that expedited shipping is an option, my only question is, "why"?
Just my humble opinion, but I have a feeling the mileage won't vary much.
What do we know of their steels (other than the obvious crap metal) what kind/ grades do they use....?? Does anyone have this info lying around or can give me an idea where to find it???
I'm asking because I'm tempted to try some heat tempering on the razors improve their edge holding....
That would be like heat treating a piece of carboard :)
The thing is: if they couldn't be bothered to make a decent razor, what makes you think they paid a premium for tool steel, rather than 'any thing that looks like steel, in a good light'. Unless the steel has the capability to get a decent edge, you really can't get a decent edge to it.
And aside from all of that: if you try heat treating a razor that is already ground to a hollow, the thin part of the blade will bend and twist like a ribbed potato chip.
A naive friend tried this brand of razor for his first straight razor shave experience. It went awful and put him off to straight shaving. I suggested he give it a go again with a better brand. My suggestion is to stay away from Kriegers. They appear to be a tad harsh on ones face.
The reason I was wondering what this crap metal is made of is because most stainless steel can be hardened in the home oven (although I'll not post the heat treating chart here because of its' size) and although they may have been heat treated, that does not mean that they cannot be re-heat treated to a better hardness! Additionally, most if not all, have and excelent resistance to warping IF the proper precautions are taken in the process of cool-down air hardening..... and I need something to do at night!
Thanks for the info though, the rest of us beginners are itching to get started!
I bought one for the scales. My goodness they are heavy. Kinda makes me wonder why they even bother.
what about there stropes???or zeepk stropes or whatever,,,,,i mean for the 20$ leather strop (if its leather) ???
The reason all these makes (Zeepk, Kriegar, Master etc...) are on the "avoid" list is because they are known to be really bad.
IMO theres not really any point in trying to improve them or fix them as they're just not worth the time or money and you probably wont be able to fix them anyway.
The razors are made from pig iron and are so poor that the edges fail before they get sharp enough to shave with and the strops are made from, it would appear, extract of pure Empire blend banana skin.
Seriously, stay away from anything on the avoid list. The stuff is there for a reason!
It was only my love for old things that saved me from buying one when I was first thinking about straight razor shaving.I love the idea of using something that was actually used by someone a few decades ago or from the 1800's so I bought my first razor from theinvisibleedge.co.uk and got a 1920's Flic.I didn't know anything about blade sizes and it is a 7/8th's.(now my favourite size).
Zeepk, Kriegar, Master, "Gool" or Gold Dollar should be advertized as RSO's i.e. Razor Shaped Objects.
The part that bothers me the most about them, is all of the poor souls exploring the Art of The Straight Shave might be turned off before they get started.
I am new to the SRP. I did buy a kriegar as my second razor before finding out they were on the list of razors to avoid.tOt took me quite awhile to get that razor to do the hanging hair test. Even at that point it still isn't the best shaver. It won't shave a properly prepared beard. The Selective professional I have works very well and even keeps it's edge for awhile, even though it's on the list to. Live and learn. It looks like a nice razor, a bit too heavy also. Especially compared to my two new razors, a King double temper 4/8s and a Solingen Comfort 4/8s straight razors. Those two are very nice shavers. Well, that's my two cents.

They're junk! If you notice on eBay, anything you keep seeing so many listings for just like the Sweeney Todd straight razors also, are nothing but junk & not even worth the time spent just to look at one. They are a waste of money & not only that but a big disappointment. Not that I ever bought one but I read up on them from someone else & they are junk. Pass them up. When they're pushing new razors like that so much, somethings wrong with them. My comment might get removed but if it doesn't, take my advice & leave 'em alone. If you have so much money & it is burning a hole in your pocket, spend it on an old quality razor but none of these! They've even made the list of razors to avoid on here:

Impressive necro :D
It was the first I bought, and I just used it a few days ago to shave the old inspection sticker off my Fiat 500 and replace it the new one.
Goes like this:
Prep: Windex
Razor: Kriegar
Brush (or moral equivalent thereof): Scott paper towels
1 pass wtg and two or three ATG
After Shave :Windex (like the guy in My big fat greek wedding)
The Kriegars can be put to good use, but not on your face.
Maybe they aren't junk, but I believe they're also not razors but knives shaped like razors. A quick look at eBay and you can see that many of them and their ilk have "knife" in the description.
I'd never buy anything with "knife" in the description as a razor unless it was a recognizable razor brand.
Cheers, Steve
I don't like heavy scales on any razor either. It throws it out of balance and makes certain grips difficult. I have a Boker Elite that is a wonderful razor. But If I could have changed one thing about it, it would have been the lined scales that make it heavier than need be. Now attache those scales to a blade that struggles to cut through water and you've got what sounds like a lovely experience in front of the mirror. In fact, the mirror is really there so you can witness your own disappointment.
