This is my first straight razor and my first post here at srp, the blade is a Bengall and it has been restored becouse the handle was in very bad condition. I would like to know what you guys think of it and if anyone have som information about the blade?:)

Do you believe that TI handle with modern pins is the best option for the razor from first half of 19th century? :confused:
First, I have to say that I am shocked that no one hadn't already picked that username before now!
About the razor, Bengall's are very good razors so it should serve you well. I'm a little surprised that someone went to the bother of putting new scales on without putting a little more effort into cleaning up the blade. If you did it yourself, then I completely and apologetically withdraw that comment, especially if you are new to this!

I donīt care much that it got a newer and modern handle, for me itīs about the looks and i think it looks good. Even if its about 100 years of age between the blade and the handle.:) personally i think that just makes it cooler.
yea i was shocked that the username was free aswell. thanks for the bengall threads. It was not me who restored the knife.

It is very possible that almost nothing was done to the blade. Almost all the examples I have of this mark came to me with no rust and very minor tarnish, if any. I also stopped using oil on the one I store in the bathroom since it seems not to need any protection from regular environmental moisture. But since I believe them to be, as others have said, to be from the first half of the 19th century, it is not possible that they are stainless (as far as I can ascertain).
It is a rather heavy razor, be careful with the pressure and take your time or the smile will carve lashes out of your face (something that a rushed morning and my usual technique taught me).
It's possible that the TI scales provide a good balance for the blade. By the way, it is not clear from the picture, but the toe makes it seem somewhat hollow ground? All of mine are wedge or near wedge.

I donīt know the word "dialed" so i donīt know what you mean by that. Can you explain it?
The blade is a 6/8 with wedge here is another pic.
In this context, "dialed in" means that it was honed properly. A bad honer will just do pretty much the same thing with every razor and because each razor can be unique, the honing may or may not be suitable for that razor. A good honer will adjust the honing to accommodate the razor to get the best performance out of it.
The term probably came from (I'm guessing) something like turning a tuning dial on a radio to get the best signal. You turn the dial back and forth to adjust in reaction to the static and sound quality until you find the dial position that makes the best sound.
Okay i havenīt got the chance to test it yet but it seams like the guy who sold it to me hone alot of knives.
He told me the knife have been honed like this:
Naniwa Superstones och Escher as follows: 1 000 (bevel setting) - 3 000 - 8 000 - 10 000 12 000 -Escher- Strigel
Since Iīm new with striaghtrazors i donīt know to much about it. But I thought it sounded good:)
Acording to GOINS' he estimated 1748-1953 that Bengall was orginally a touchmark assigned to Luke Cadman of Sheffield. From 1906 to 1953 it was used by T.R. Cadman. My guess is 1840-60.
Bengalls are fantastic shavers....wish I had mine back!
