Hello to all,
I currently have been using a straight razor for a year. I notice many members acquire multiple razors and I want to know if there is much difference between major brands?
I currently use a Dovo Black Star full-hollow 5/8 carbon razor. Will a different brand with a different size and ground yield much of a difference?:shrug:
Different brands and sizes may weigh differently. For example, I have a Gold Dollar 6/8 full hollow that I use when I haven't shaved in a really really long time and I want to remove the super heavy growth. My pride and joy is my Dovo 5/8; the steel is not as heavy, its not as wide so its easier to have precision under the nose, and its a little easier to maneuver. Some people like to let their razors rest so they don't have to be re honed so often so they rotate through different razors.
Wet shavers have this addiction to buying tons of shaving stuff, even when we don't need any more or we have plenty of stuff to last us for a very long time.
Manufacturers use different steels, grinds, and heat treatments, so each razor has it's own personality. Many of us like to have a "rotation" so that we can enjoy the variety of a wedge or full "singing" hollow, or a small 4/8 or a 8/8 chopper.Quote:

first decide what characteristics you like if your current razor then ask the forum for advice on identifying a similar razor
The sceptic in me really wonders.... how many of use on a blind shave test (someone else would have to be doing the work here) could really distinguish as well as we seem to suggest we could. :fim:
Now that being suggested i will be the first to admit I have some RAD.
Slightly different characterstics, but I believe they all can give a great shave. Once you learn to get consistent BBS results, you may develop a preference for certain razors for any reason. I fretted over my first razor purchase, thinking it had to be perfect. shortly after buying my first one, I bought 4 different straight razor and started selling off a few and buying a few others. Now the fun is about having a variety to enjoy and restore.

I posed that question some time ago. In a blind test I doubt people could identify particular razors but they could tell differences between razors. In the end they might all give the same result but the feel would be a little or a lot different with each.Quote:
