i've been shaving with a Boker King Cutter and a Red Point 917 honed by dylan, don't really know what size they are or what the grind is, but i'm getting a stereotypical shaving sound from them. today i finished rescaling and honing an orphaned Geo. Wostenholm's Hollow Ground and shaved with it. no noise. nice shave. it's about 1/8" smaller than the two razors. is this typical?
Different razors make different sounds, I would not claim to be an expert but I would think the full hollows would make a higher pitched sound as the blade is much thinner than a wedge or near wedge; which seem to make little or no sound.
Its been my experience that the larger the hollow ground the more it has a tendency to make noise. More thin metal between the spine and the edge equals more flex and noise while cutting.
I find that my hollow razors make much more of a sound than my wedges. There is slight differences between different sizes of each, but the biggest difference for me is between the two grinds.
I think it is more an issue of the blade stiffness/steel used in the blade. I have hollows that sing but they are very thin grinds and flexible blades. I have other hollow grinds that are very stiff and make less noise. Wedges make almost no noise in my experieance. A small blade would most likely be stiffer than a large blade (5/8 vs 7/8). A long stick will bow easier than a short stick. The shorter blade may have more rigidity due to the width or simply have a different composition in the steel.
