I can across this razor over the weekend...At the time I was not familiar with the Tuckmar name....seems everyone has good things to say about them. The key interest for me was the scales,never seen any like this , so for $12.00 hey why not! Any Ideas? They feel soft kinda like hardbound leather.

Soak it in neatsfoot oil..
It looks like pressed leather to me. I've never tried salvaging a set, but as Wintchase mentioned, soaking in oil may help.

They are leather, just removed a set off a Herters razor 2 days ago..
Neets might work, or it might soften them too much. and they will lose their form ... I have never tried myself..

Yep they're leather alright... Thank you all for the kind replies . I decided to send it to Bob Keyes and have him do his magic. I going to have hit rescaled ,but going to retain the scales maybe for some future project or just to keep them around for a historical prospective. And I full intend to enjoy this razor.

i feel like I've missed something here -- what's wrong with the scales? There's not enough info in the pics for me to see problems. In fact, what little I can see looks to be in very good shape. Leather like this was probably hot-pressed together with something like hide adhesives. Your razor can only be original once, be sure of what you want before you pull it apart. Just sayin'.
They'll probably be very slippery and smelling of neatsfoot oil by now.Quote:

I'm going to save the scales..but not use them just yet. I have a pretty good idea of what I want ...that's why I'm holding onto them. remember i bought that razor because of the scales.....Finding out that a Tuckmar is great razor was the Bonus.
are the scales rank smelling or something? i have never seen pressed leather scales like these in person.. but to me it looks like they are still very usable.. why not keep them on this razor and just restore the blade?
