Hammond 5/8 Extra Hollow Ground MAGNETIC

This is kind of an update to an earlier thread concering my Razor Addiction Disease. Thought I'd post info on the newly acquired. You all seem to love pics, so I'll give some, and might be helpful for some new person searching in here or on the net.

I got in this Razor a couple of days ago, a Hammond EXTRA "made from Finest Sheffield Silver Steel". on the tang. I had not handled it much and was looking at how flat the edge was (it needed just a bit of work) and was using my diamond DMT steel as a guide on it's flatness, when I noticed that it is magnetized. Kind of odd I thought, but I also saw a razor on ebay that's name was "Electric" and it boasted "magnetized" right on the tang of the razor. Honed up real nice and gives a very nice shave. Cost.... I was looking on ebay REAL late one night and saw this as a new listing, and it had a Buy-It-Now of $12.95. From all the pictures, I figured it might not be around too long on there, so at 2:15 AM (thereabout) I pressed the buy-it-now button and now have this razor. There are some odd spots on it, I thought were maybe rust blemishes or pitting, but on looking at the area closely with a 20X Lupe, it looks like it was a metal imperfection from the onset at manufacturing. I did research it a bit just before the buy, and it was made in Solingen Germany. Anyways, pics below.. :D

It does appear to have quite a flat spot on the sides of the spine. I don't know if it shows up well enough, but you might see it in the pic of the blade that shows "Extra Hollow Ground". Looking at the front of the razor, it starts in with the thin part of the blade about half way down, so I wouldn't consider it an extra hollow anymore. Dimensionally, it's a little under 5/8 but I am wondering it maybe it was a 6/8 from the onset, or would a 5/8 loose that much edge material? One picture (blade close up) looks like it's right at the stabilizer area.

I restored a Hammond some time back, IIRC it was around Thanksgiving I will look for pics when I get home... I do remember the owner being very happy with the shaving edge on it... So they do take a nice one ...

Glen, do you recall if it was magnetic? Just curious as to why would a razor be magnetized. Enough of the spine is worn it definitely, along with the others, will get tape. A wise honer once told me tape is good. I've listened to him along with his advise on making a start on 1000 so that it shaves hair on my arm better than my sharpest knife, all the way down the length, not just the toe, not just the heel, not just the middle, but all the way. Don't even think of going to further grits until you get it to that point on 1000.

As an aside, I was Woodcraft and picked up a large gray/blue shone there, 12,000 grit from Guangxi Provence. I think I'll need to lap it first with 220 and 600 etc and clean it afterward. Just how much time is usually spent on such a fine grit hard stone as this?

I don't remember it being Magnetized but many were, it was a gimmick back in the day...

The other way they get magnetized is from some restore benches...
There is a jig that was recommended for awhile that used rare earth magnets to hold the razor secure that also magnetized the razors...

Well, this Chinese 12K is a dull gray with not really anything of blue in it unless you imagine hard enough. It's really reminds me of some of the Escher pictures or that slate that is glued on the back of my Belgian Coticule. When I lapped it, it got a lot of slurry using 220 grit, and finally settled in and glided around. Went to 600 and left a little more slurry, mosly a milkish gray color and when I went to 1500 grit wet/dry, it less slurry, but the stuff on the paper let it glide around like it was on warm butter in a hot pan. A finger touch would move the stone across the paper. I was patient and made sure that I had lapped on the 1500 some time and then called it quits when I looked at the water on the stone and it was like glass. It really is an odd stone. Like I say, more dull gray than anyting, with some darker streeks here and there.

I'll hone up that Hammond and finish on it. I also got in a Germania Cuttelry Works "OXFORD" Warranted. It's a 5/8 (actually just a freckle past that) nice shiny condition, nice scales, I picked up on ebay fo $14.89 incl. shipping. Spine is nice and clean, narry any rub marks on the side. File jimps underneath. Blunt end.

I have two of that same 12K. They're great stones but completely inconsistant. One of the stones cuts like an 8K and the other like a 12-16K. Both work great with a slurry.

Good memory Glen you did and it was mine,and it was around thanksgiving.Gibbs mine dosnt say magnetic but its really sharp and would take the stink off a monkey

I have been wondering this... does magnetic actually mean anything? I couldn't find a good reason that something would be magnetic other than possibly marketing.

I recently acquired a Morley and Sons razor that doesn't say magnetic but I discovered it was after it attracted a nearby nail file. This is what made me wonder... what the crap?:confused:

Shaved with it tonight, again. Nice clean easy shave, even the chin. Done in 2 passes and looks great!!
