Question of shavability

How will this affect shavability? Do you think that it will have to be honed out?

I don't have any honing experience, but since you can see it, then I would not advise trying to shave with it yet, the razor might be very unkind to your strop and face. If you have honing experience, great, you should be able to fix that. If not, then check the classifieds here and under "Member Services" you will find experienced members who can fix it and get your razor shave ready.

I really can't tell from the photos. Is the blade bent to one side there?

Yes, I think that will have to be honed out.

I don't see a bend.

Would the size of the blade be affected that much, or just up to the top of that pit? I know without having it in hand it might be a bit hard to know, but the blade is basically new except that pit.

I'm sorry, I don't follow your question about the size of the blade.

If you hone something out, you need to remove the steel from the whole length of the razor. Unless you are honing out something at the toe or heel and are ok with modifying the edge geometry.

I am assuming that the hone would have to take material off to some point above the pit, I am just wondering if that would be a lot or a little. I guess that I am asking if it would say turn a 5/8 into a 4/8 width razor. I hope this helps.

It's hard to tell how far you've zoomed in, but I'd guess that if there isn't a bur in the chip you COULD shave with it, and maybe even strop it out...BUT (and that's a big one) any hair that hits that nick will likely be pulled, not cut, making for a rather uncomfortable shave that could require you to go back and do clean up wherever that nick left hair behind.

If I were you I'd try running it over a barber's hone, but A) I have a barber's hone, B) I'm comfortable enough with the honing process to feel I could manage it, C) (and perhaps this should come before A) It looks small enough to get out with a barber's hone, and D) I'd be willing to send it off to be honed if I couldn't make it work.


EDIT: I guess I let this window sit a while before getting around to answering.

So far as the width of the blade: Essentially, yes the width of the blade will be reduced down to the bottom of that chip. Will it make a 5/8 blade a 4/8, NO, unless you have a 1/8 chip on a 5/8 blade, you won't make it a 4/8. But if you continually get 1/32 chips in your 5/8's edge, it will eventually get honed down to 4/8.
