Revisor 5/8 "new".. BRAND new!

Well, the post office delivered this box this afternoon. Stamps in German and other documents to pass customs. Inside was the Revisor I had ordered....well close :hmmm: I had ordered a 5/8 model 5-0002 which was with a Green Background. It was kind of a toss up between it and the 5-0004 with the Red on the gold for the blade decoration. What I got was the 5-0003, the Blue model in-between. Would be too much hassle and cost to do an exchange with Gunter & Thomas Kronenberg, so I decided to just keep it. Here are just a few quick pics of it as it came out of the box.
NOTE: My pictures taken with my Nikon and flash washed out the Gold around the blade emblems. It looks exactly like the bottom pictures, except blue.

Straight out of the box I looked at the edge with the 20X Lupe and it appeared nice bevel and clean. I tried a few hairs, and they popped off anywhere along the blade length. So I lathered up tonight, stropped it about 40 times and got the smoothest silkiest shave I have ever had. No kidding, up around my mustache and down around the lower lip and chin it cut them cleanly, no bit of tugging at all. Under the neck, and then down the side of the face with nice longer strokes, it took off the whiskers, clean as a whistle. I got done with the first pass and felt and I really didn't need to do a 2nd pass, but. what the heck... why not. So I re-applied the Ogallala Bay Rum lather, glided over the area again with the Revisor razor and maybe got a bit more along the jaw line. No nicks, no cuts, not tugging not jumping, it was the sharpest razor I have ever felt.

I don't know what they did to it there in Solingen Germany before packaging it up, but they really put an edge on it. Came in a nice box with some fine foam packing in the box, instructions not to cut other things just whiskers... etc. DON'T laugh!! I showed a guy at work my new Dovo a while back and told him how sharp it was, and he was going to grab some paper and cut it with the razor. I objected, he seemed pretty put out.. "What, you can't even cut paper with it?" One of those....

Still feeling my face and can't believe how quickly I got the shave done tonight and it's very smooth!

I know a couple of things in my tenderfoot beginning of learning to shave with a straight razor. I like 5/8 over 6/8. I've tried Troggie's Filarmonica that is a 6/8 and it and my 6/8 DOVO seem just a bit big for me (personal opinion). Many like them for the ability to hold copious amounts of soap and whiskers. Also I like round points better. I'm glad I made my AK-SAR-BEN into a round point and on some of those I have that I really have no intentions of ever selling I have half a notion of turning those into round points. My ears and other parts that get nicked with the end of the square (or Spike) point will thank me. I can shave with them, but you really really have to pay attention to where the end of the razor is or it will remind you.

There is probably no difference in cutting, just preference in the Green color.

Only other thing I wish it had were the file jimps on the tang area. I guess super glue and sand could fix that.. *just kidding!*

If you mouse over the picture (the one that looks like Jimmy Carter), it shows Haar test meaning "hair test" in German. Old world craftsmanship. With my last name of Jenewein, it consider the Solingen blades world class.

If you didn't get what you wanted...send it back. My very best shaver is a NOS Revisor rescaled/honed by Max. It's perfect.

~Joe~, you would be so pleased with the razor. Have you seen their offerings? Like a kid in a candy store. As far as sending it back, I'm sure Thomas would work something out with me to send it back and exchange it. But, it's almost foolish to spend the money to ship overseas and go though cutstoms again and have them send it back here, though customs, again, when it's a color. Where the one above, the Blue on Gold was 88.00 Euros (down to 73.95 Euros subtracing the VAT), the blue scale Extra Hollow Ground is only 68.00 Euros, so it would be even less than that with the VAT subtracted. Also it has jimps on it for sure.

They are still being made. Older German craftsmen, there, enjoying their work and teaching some newer younger craftsmen the art and business. It would be nice if someone were to buy enough of them to be a distributor/dealer in the U.S.A.

I drool over their site weekly. You didn't mention if there's a price difference in the three models. Send'em an email and let them know what happened. I've never heard a bad word about them, so I suspect they'll do something to right the wrong.

Same price for all three razors, 88.00 Euros. Only differenece is 5-0002 is Green, 5-0003 is Blue and 5-0004 is Red. This is before VAT discount since we, (USA) are out of Germany.

I did email Thomas and let him know that it arrived, and that the color was not what he sent me for an invoice, nor what was on the Paypal description when I sent it in. It cost me 10 euros, which is a little over $14.00 US dollars to ship it here. Now, for me to ship it back would cost me another $14.00 dollars at least, and then just to change a color. It would not be too economical at that point. At that price (original was $125.54) add another 15.00 to that and you have $139.00 into the razor. For just a little more I could have bought a DOVO Prima Klang "singing" razor, although I wonder if I would have gotten as nice a shave as this Revisor.

Beautiful one Vern !!! Personally I like the blue the best of the three, Almost as nice as the AK-SAR-BEN a German razor saved. Nebraska spelled backwards

Hey Gibbs,
Ive done business with the guys at Revisor and Thomas is a really nice guy,and they have some really nice razors there,but have you ever wondered the circumstances that must have happened to have a brand new razor avoid being used or abused all this time until it ended up in your hands? I just got a NOS Lutz razor from the twenties today and it made me wonder-this thing is virtually the way it hit the store 80 something years ago.makes you wonder,anyhow enjoy your new toy!

Hello Gibbs, I visited the site for the Revisor straights, looked at a couple of them, saw the prices, but for the love of mike, how do you manage to place an order??? I did not see anyplace to do that. Like you, I do like the green better. Still a nice razor. I'd like to try one, but have to figure out where the order form is. Enjoy your Revisor!!! Sonny082

you send them an email with the item number and they will send you an email back with how to pay and send you an invoice.

Thank Ryan! Until last Feb 8th I did not know anyone actually USED a straight razor. Bought my first 2 on Feb 10th, a WISS & Sons and a A. W. Wadsworth (antique store, both about 16.00 ea), and it was after joining this forum and getting in the 3 water slips stones from Troggie (Whom I am eternally grateful to! ), that I actually shaved with a straight razor. So, yes I have been oogling the Revisor razors, but not any longer than in here.

Mark, thanks for the compliments here and at the other thread I put in about the AK-SAR-BEN razor. It was my first "restoration" if you will. I have shaved with the AK-SAR-BEN a couple of times and I must be getting my honing down better as it was a good shave.

Sony082: It's like those previous posts say. Email Thomas Kronenberg with what model you want to buy, he will email you back the price and attach an invoice. I used the invoice number as well as the actual model number of the razor on my PayPal "send money" form. PayPal will auto change the currency configuration for you at that moment, depending on whether the eruo:dollar is up or down, it's what you pay at that moment.

BuddyRockefella: I ordered at PayPal on the 17th of March and I got it on Friday the 25th of March. Thomas said in an email it takes between 7 to 21 days to get here from Germany depending on the amount of time in customs.

Now, FWIW, at another forum Woodash told me that Thomas Kronenberg had told him that they use a Belgian Coticule for their hone for the razors before sending them out. It is a testament to the expert use of a Belgian Coticule. They also could (more than likely) have access to some of the better vintage Coticules there at Revisor. There is sharp, but this was an exceptionally sharp AND smooth razor to shave with.

Thanks for the sharing of the pics! Those are great looking razors. I had also had a 6/8 shoulderless on my "looking" list. I liked the way that the upper spine had all that decoration work. You don't see that a lot in razors. They are both elegant and functional.
