Anybody Familiar with This One?

Hi guys. I obtained this one a while back and can't find much info about it. I will soon be sending it to resident forumite gssixgun for proper Spa treatment and a nice set of scales. There is nothing wrong with the factory scales, but something about this blade just screams, "rescale me!"

As you can see in the pics, the spine and monkey tail are blued, and it says "Wagner" on one side and "Silver Steel" on the other. On the side that says Silver Steel it also says Germany in smaller letters underneath.

If any of you boys have info on this particular brand of razor I would love to hear it. I would also like to hear your shave experiences from those of you who might own one. Thanks!

The Standard Guide to Razors shows a Wilhelm Wagner but the dates don't look right to me for that razor 1876-1890 that razor looks more like my Koch (Kama) which is way newer than 1890

Well, now we just gotta figure out what scales to put on it. Can't wait to see what you come up with. I don't know whether to have you just mirror polish the blade and put some flashy scales on it, or polish but keep the bluing and do something catchy but classy for handle material.....hmmmmm

IMO, keep the bluing. But then again, I'd want to keep the original scales and the original grind marks too. I guess I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type. But it's your razor, so all that matters is how you want her.

I'm getting to where if it's from Soligen or the US from the 20's, it's probably magnificent. One find today looked completely new. (Henry Sears & Sons - 'Prussia'". 'Took the most awsome edge I've gotten from a coti. Oddballs from these two locations are often just precious gems.

Your itch is for some new shoes (scales). I'd suggest keeping the originals in good shape, take care in unpinning so they can be preserved. Enjoy that sweet looking blade.

BTW just a little lesson about restoration here OK,,,, since this is what I do, I look first, and look very closely...

Those are most likely NOT the original scales, look at the pins in pic #1 look and compare the pivot pin to the wedge pin...see the difference
See a lazy person will only change the pivot pin, when they replace the scales with a new pair, or clean a razor and replace the originals, the wedge pin is normally left alone... Some of us that hate that look, will pop both if you are going to open a razor, or replace the scales, so that they match and look correct..
Now I could be wrong and it could be the pic, or that somebody pounded that crap outta the pin but I doubt it :)
It also could be the original scales but the razor has been restored already ??? but something looks slightly off to my eye...
That very well could be why that one razor is screaming re-scale me too :D

You may well be right, Glen, but it looks to me like it's all original. I guess you'll get a better look soon, and you can let us know from the up close and personal inspection. I'm curious myself.
