My New Dovo! Very Exciting Times For Me.

Just came in the mall yesterday.

DOVO GRENADILLE 6/8" STRAIGHT RAZOR!
SRD Black Leather Stop 3"
PRORASO MENTHOL/EUCALYPTUS SHAVE CREAM

I felt like a little kid on Christmas opening a new toy box.

I also managed to not shave since I ordered it so I could give it a test run. "I am not a pro in any way shape or form" but right out of the box "honed by SRD" and with a few passes on the strop all I can saw is "WOW" super close shave and the razor feels great in the hand "bit heavy but that what I wanted".

I will write up a full blown review once I give it a few more shaves with it.

As for the cream, I am not sure if I am a fan of the Menthol in the cream. The cream is fantastic as far and getting a ton of lather building up and smells nice. I guess my skin just does not like the menthol "any suggestions for a cream"

Nice! You got a really nice blade there too!

As far as creams go, I'd highly recommend the Art of Shaving creams. They're a little pricier, but I absolutely love the Sandalwood. Gives a great lather and just smells fantastic.

Glad you enjoyed your first shave! Stick with it and they'll only get better. :)

The Dovo Grenadille is one of the most beautiful razors in the Dovo line. I think you will really enjoy it. I believe you made a good choice getting the Proraso shaving cream. I have tried shaving creams by Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS), Edwin Jagger, Trumpers, Old Spice (India), Mitchell's Wool Fat (MWF), Truefitt & Hill samplers, Williams soap, VDH soap, Proraso White, and Proraso Green. I like the Proraso Green best of all for my everyday shaving cream. It is nice to have some of the "luxury" creams but the Proraso is hard to beat for comfort. It may be inexpensive but it is not cheap.

All set now, should make for wonderful shaves, with all that new and shiny gear.

L'Occitane stores have both Cade creams and soaps. Both are wonderful with subtle scents.

Also looks like a pretty good strop.

Just another Picture of the blade, I am worried that the design is going to come off when I strop and clean of the blade. Any one have this issue?

Proper stropping and proper rinsing and drying of the blade should not effect the etching.

Really quick question. when I am shaving and i build up to much cream on the razor I was it under some warm water and then clean it off on a towel. Is this correct?

That will work, but it's best not to get any water on or inside the scales. That is the worst enemy of staining and rust.

You can rinse it with hot water, careful not to bang the blade against the faucet and damage it, or get the scales and the pivot area wet. I use a cloth to wipe the lather during the shave and rinse the blade in the end. You might want to try that, too.

As long as you don't use any abrasives you should be just fine.

I wipe the lather off the blade with a paper towel in my hand, not laying on the sink. Then I rinse the blade in a basin of warm/hot water I used to prep my face. Dry throughly and be sure the scales are dry also. I avoid running the blade under a faucet to eliminate the possibility of hitting the faucet with the blade. In the end do what ever works best for you as long as the scales, pivot area and blade are clean and dry when you finish.

I've tried a lot of different things to wipe my blade. At first I used old cloth diapers but they were really old and thin. I tried a natural sea sponge based on an older thread here on SRP, but wondered about residual bacteria, etc. Obie mentioned once that he used microfiber cloths, so I sent SWBO to WalMart. She bought a couple of packs of them for dirt cheap. I use a new one every day to wipe the lather off of my razor using a stropping motion. Works like a charm! Occasionally I rinse the blade with warm water during the shave, avoiding the scales/hinge as Lynn mentioned. As other say, one must be incredibly careful doing this. If you take your eye off the blade for a fraction of a second you'll ding the blade on the faucet.

I use a wet sponge from the dollar store to wipe off the blade. At the end I give it a quick rinse and "strop" it on a towel. just another way to skin that cat

Tip: If you get the pivot pin area wet, after running a piece of toilet paper up through the schales, you can put a few drops of rubbing alcohol on that area and the alcohol will combine with the water and dry out that area you can't get to next to the pivot pin.

BTW...Don't worry about the etching coming off the blade when you strop or clean the blade. That will only begin to occur after your 10,000th shave with the razor.

Congrats on your eye to pick a gorgeous factory custom. Don't think I'd worry about the gold wash. The mentioned maintainence will work fine. As far as strop wear, Dovo has made a few razors. Feel comfort that this razor is to be used. As pretty as it is, it does not require extreme pampering.
