Hi i am anew member this is my first thread.I was wondering if anyone could tell me any info on my WADE&BUTCHER FOR BARBERS USE RAZOR such as Year,Make,Model,Size, basically just wanted to know if this a good razor i cleaned it up a little it shined up quickly.I paid 10 or 15 dollars for it in the mid-nineties. Just recently found it when cleaning out my dresser had totally forgotten about it.Any info is appreciated,Sorry about pic quality
Looks like a good piece. Pre-1890, difficult to say anything else from the photos other than I'd say it's a rescale (though quite a nice one, are they horn?). Sharpened, it'll probably be a good shaver.
I'm not big on all the details on the different makes out there.
However, I can tell you this;
That is an awesome razor, very popular brand and a great shaver.
Get that thing properly honed by someone who knows how, and you'll be able to get the sweetest of shaves:)
not sure if there horn i think they are.theres one crack in the scale near the pin about a quarter inch long.thanks for responding
Welcome to SRP. That is a great razor and one that is much sought after. You got a great deal on it. If the crack is at the pivot end that could be a problem. At the wedge end it is not so bad if it is stable. To me the scales look as if they may be original. If they are horn they will have some lines within the horn. In general the portion where the end of the blade inserts may be misshapen from the weight of it. As Birnando suggested, definitely get it professionally honed if you intend to shave with it. In the 'member services' of the SRP Classifieds you'll find members who offer honing for a nominal fee. :gl:
that crack is at the wedge end if you look close you can see it in the last pic.Also there is fine lines in the handle.thx
As others have said - One of Wade & Butchers top models. Probably dates to mid to late 1800's. They are excellent shavers when properly honed.
I am very happy to these good comments.I showed this razor to a knife dealer at a local flea market and he told me these style wade&butcher razors were very common and had bad reputation.Then he said he would do me a favor & take it off my hands for 20 bucks.Whew glad i didnt fall for it.Everyone at srp has been very helpful&friendly.
Lol. The knife dealer should be ashamed of himself. Wade and Butcher Barber Use razors are sought after, great shavers and worth considerably more than the $20 he offered.

thanks now im just trying to get it shave ready my brother was able to get the toe or point end of the blade very sharp,but havin a little trouble at the heal.Nead to get a proper set of hones.Just gotta save up some money

These razors are coveted by many of the users here (and rightfully so). They are awesome. Yours looks to be a pretty good condition. As others mentioned, send it out to one of the pro's here to get it honed up. You won't be disappointed.
It may be useful to purchase another razor that is a little bit smaller to learn how to shave with a straight if you don't already. The bigger razors can be more challenging to use as a beginner. Obviously, it isn't absolutely necessary. Just a suggestion. If you get into this hobby you'll end up purchasing a bunch of them anyway.

thanks for the comments and advice.Moving to a smaller razor makes since as this razor is big and ive never straight shaved.Dont want my first straight razor shave to be my last.lol
That knife dealer was absolutely correct! Those razors are terrible! Most came from a factory infected with that black plague. It's probably infected all the steel too. It would probably be best to take it to a scientific lab to properly test and dispose of such deadly disease.
Luckily for you, I have two that are close to me. I'll be the one to step up and do you the favor. ;)
Dont worry about getting hones, get the job done by a pro, be sure to learn honing as well as shaving on a different razor. Very nice. Just to increase the envy factor here I picked one up two weeks ago at an estate auction for 30$, like new. :) No bug bites, no rust, only a patina, even the box was in great shape.
