any examples of a razor using hex nuts instead of pins??

Hi all,

Is there anyone out there that has used the hex head nuts and bolts instead of pins in thier restorations? I wonder how they look before I buy any. Peening is just not a skill I seem to possess. :(

Any help, or pics of how it looks on a razor would be most helpful!!

If you jump over to my public profile and look at my restorations pictures you'll see a couple of razors that have them on both the toe and pivot, and I think there's a pic or two of where I've used them on the pivot only.

They're a little bulky. For a while I had more blades than scales (because I kept cracking the old ones during unpinning), so I would rotate the scales from time to time. It was kind of nice, because I got to practice my honing more often.

I'm with you in the peening dept. I have a jewelers hammer and a steel plate with a depression in it and I can tap from today to tomorrow and nothing happens. The razors I have rescaled I've used the hex nuts. They are not quite as neat as the classic method but I think they are fine. Some of the custom makers use other adjustable hardware.

The new Hart Steel straight razor I purchased came with Hex screw. It works fine and I think it looks great. They included a Hex wrench to keep it tight.

I use microfasteners hex bolts only on my no-nonsense razors, e.g. my Dovo Best

I prefer a traditional good peened pin :)

There are a few different makes out there.

Yea, that is just awful.... (yawn and a big lol)

My take on the whole thing is: if you peen good then peen... if you don't, use what's available that resides inside your 'skill set' and when you're done feel good about it.

I like peens, but I don't mind hex bolts. The ones I have seen I neither prefer nor dislike. I do think vintage razors with vintage scales look best with peens. For everything else anything goes.

I've actually got a few that use hex nuts.

Beautiful Maxi!! That is exactly what I'm going for!! Not necessarily the hex, as much as the tiny octo nuts. I just ordered some along with a couple of sets of scales. All the razors you all showed me are excellent examples. Just what I needed to see. I think they look great on the new acrylics.

Bumping an old thread to ask about hex pins like the ones in the pics from Johnmrson. Where can these be obtained online and which model/size are they? I would like to get some of these.

Do you recall at the Toronto meet up Holi was mentioning another supplier for washers that were a different size than Microfasteners?
I have several of their small Hex head screws and nuts but they are actually hex head ... not round headed hex sockets.
If you can recall that company please post the name.

Scroll down to "adjustable pins"....there is a knifemaking supply company listed where you can purchase packs of the 2 Torx screws, and the 1/8" barrel you need to attach them

The barrel sits in the hole in the tang.
