Hi everyone. I found out about LarryAndro from whippeddog yesterday, and he is a real nice guy and I want to get my first razor from him. After looking through several razors, it has come down to choosing between a very decorative Dovo or a nice J Stevens& sons razors. They are both 6/8 razors. Which should I go for?
Is the J Stevens a Sheffield?
If so I'd go for the Stevens, but I love Sheffield blades! In fairness either will serve you very well, assuming the Stevens is of good origin of course. DOVO's are very good.
I am not sure if Stevens is the actual brand, it has "J. Stevens & Sons England" on the tang. I know nothing about brands yet. Does that sound like a razor Sheffield has? It also has "Fine Surgical Steel" etched on the blade.Quote:

As long as they are quality razors it doesn't matter. Just get the one you like the best or is in the best shape. just be aware if the ornate Dovo has Gold Wash on it that can make cleaning more difficult if you want to preserve the gold.
If it's from England you should be fine. :)
As TBS says, just go with the one you like the look of, as they both sound like quality blades.

As the other members said both razors are excellent one. When I start with straight razor shaving my first razor was Dovo so I will recommend Dovo but as said both are very nice shavers so take what you like more.
Just thought I would let everyone know I went with the Dovo. I can't wait to try shaving with a straight razor.

If both razors are round points or muted square points, I would say pick the one you like. However, I would caution about buying a square point or spike point as a beginner because you will probably experience a few nasty nicks on your beautiful face. My recommendation for beginners would be a round point razor until you get some experience under your belt.
Thanks for the info. That was actually one of the factors as to why I chose the Dovo. The Dovo's all seem to have rounded points and the Stevens had a flat point.Quote:

Thanks everybody for all the warm welcomes. I actually bought a barber stone for this razor assuming everyone quickly learns to hone their own razor. Was that a bad idea? I know it takes practice to do it very well, but I just thought as long as I am careful I can at least do it well enough to keep it at least shave able.Quote:

Get the razor(s) professionally honed for the first time and then maintain the edge on the Barber's hone when it feels like it is starting to tug.
