There are 5000+ views on this (including about 8 from me) and I really want it but don't want to pay $80 for it. Why is no one else buying it? Also, is it a 8/8?

grant9908,
A 6/8 Gong was what I started straight razor shaving with in the late 80s; I have two 6/8 Gongs' now, and a 'tiny' Gong (9/16) and they are very nice shavers :)
As to the size of the razor in the pictures, I cannot tell, but would suggest that it might be a 6/8 or a 13/16 ?
Why not make an offer for the razor ? (send a PM to BuddyRockafella) :)
Have fun & good luck !
Best regards
Russ
.......would that I could........but I *just bought a razor off here a few weeks ago and my fiancee would *kill* me if I bought another one before even really using this last one.....see....I'm a family man and my sales pitch for starting all this in the first place was that the Fusion cartridges I was buying were $5.07 a cartridge and were only going to keep getting more pricey.....as to where this was a one time investment and done. DAMN YOU R.A.D. lol but what I really wanted to know was why so many views and no one is buying it? Is something wrong so that masses of people are saying no?
He is asking more than anyone is willing to pay apparently. It's a 7/8.
But this thread might help it sell :)

RAD - Resistance is futile:borg:
Have fun !

Now if it was a regular 6/8, the price would definitely be too much, I'd expect a 6/8 to be at least 50% less, but 7/8 is big boys stuff, and $80 doesn't seem that bad at all, and worldwide shipping is included.
If I weren't broke from RAD, I'd be all over it! :)
Refer to this thread to placate your fiancee

Now that we have that sorted, buy it and enjoy the ride....hehehehe
Seriously, I would probably look more favourably on this razor if it were a heavier grind - I'm having enough trouble with a full hollow let alone an extra hollow.
Just my $0.02
Cheers,
Geoff
Well.....as far as I'm concerned....I have two 5/8, so now I need a 6/8, 7/8, 8/8 and Apparently a wedge :)
So true. I guess I had better skip the 7 day roll up case and go straights to the 28 straight razor holder case. I was thinking about skipping all the stuff people like to talk about and go right to the ones that people have already agreed on. 5/8, 8/8, wedge. Maybe a 6/8 somewhere in there.
Don't forget that razors also have different origins. Some like sheffields, others like german made razors. There are spanish, frensh and swedish razors. Polish and russian razors. Japan has made some excellent razors. There are framebacks. Wedges. Hollows. 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 and 8/8's. Rarities like 3/8 and 9/8's. New razors. Antique razors with history. They all feel and shave differently.
What does NOS mean? Does that mean It's cheap on here but could he sold for more money elsewhere?
I think you guys have cured me of RAD :( thank you.
I looked at it ,and Im a pushover, and already have 19 razors and the only reason I can come up with is that it dosnt ring my bell, maybe its as simple as that.In my case it dosnt do it for me,maybe its the same for others.....also its not shiney
Grant,
That razor has traveled a long way to get to where it's at; it is waiting for you. It has your name written on it's soul.
Send the money, Grant, bring her to the States.
Grant, oh dear, please bring me to your home
amongst the pine needles and the pine cones.
I long to be in South Caroliney.
It hurts so much that I get whiney.
So please dear Grant you awesome confederate
bring me to SC where I can hit your beard and shredder it.
I promise you the best of shaves, all DFS, BBS, or even CCS.
All you have to do is click on the box and to PayPal say YES!
All my love,
Gong
I'm not sure why it is still there, but they are great razors...or at least mine is & it's still in my rotation. I have a feeling that instead of renewing the listing it should have been pulled and reposted at a later date. For some reason if you don't sell a razor before it rotates back to the second or third pages of listing it seems to effect the mentality of the potential buyers. This has been my experience anyways...
i forgot i even had this listed lol . the blade is around 7/8 btw
Like I said, it's all in the name recognition. Substitute "Gong" with "Filarmonica" or "Dubl Duck" and watch the price go up 10x no matter what the size. It's a shame, because there are many lesser known brands that are just as good and cost a fraction of the price. But that's e-bay for you....
Got to agree with you on this-,Ive picked up some beauts that nobody even looked at for cheap, and they are great, and some have even cought on now,and go for more money
We are fortunate as razor collectors to be in while their prices are still reasonable. However, each year they do creep up and if you think of how fast steel turns into rust, their supply will not last forever.
SRP and other places have made many young men more interested in shaving tools razors and hones. Just look at how much an Escher cost 3 years ago compared to now.
A vintage razor is one tool you buy that in most cases you are getting something that could not be made today for the same money, time and raw materials. How does that help your RAD? :)
I really don't think so...maybe better than the earliest razors in the 1800's, but there are some wonderful razors made in the early 1900's that are made of some great steel. Ya, I do think we have the abilities and technology, but I don't think it's really been pursued like it could be.
Grant9908,
Re :steel quality
There is no doubt that steels can be produced today with more stringent controls as to the composition of the alloy, and the heat-treatment can be controlled to a degree that just was not possible in the late 1800s, rearly 1900s.
I think the operative word in the above is 'can' or 'could' - doesn't mean that is necessarily so in all cases :)
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
Not to be argumentative here but especially since Dubl Duck was mentioned... I can see the benefit to obtaining a quality vintage open razor that has as part of its reputation the quality of being easy to hone. Especially for a beginner who intends to hone their own. I say this because several years ago a Dubl Duck was the first razor I honed up to shave ready from chipped and dull, and I achieved it on the first try. Nowadays of course the prices have risen, especially on the more prestigious brands.
