8/8 under $100? You need some incredible luck on eBay, or just forget about it.. And there's always that 7/8 in the classifieds... ;)
You need a time machine.
You will have to find a generous or an unsuspecting seller, because decent razors that big do not usually sell for less than $100. For generous, possibly a member here. But this is probably going to be out of your control. For unsuspecting, try antique stores, flea markets, auctions online and offline, and estate sales. If you're willing to get an indecent 8/8, your chances improve. You could at that point pay someone else to make it decent for you, or try your hand at restoring it yourself.
There is no absolute best grind unless you have some parameters, and generally, the pros and cons for choosing one grind over another is the same with a small razor as with a big razor. One major difference though is in weight;a big hollow ground will be heavy, but a big wedge razor will be much heavier

Hard to do, best chance IMHO is some antique mall, estate sale, knife fair/show. You will have hard time to find anything that is in good shape and cheap online.
I had one of my best shaves ever using a 6/8 today, so you don't need a 8/8, but they are really cool. :)
+1 and even at that it's going to require a considerable amount of leg work on your part. In two years, I've only found a single 8/8 and bought it for $30....and I hit different stores nearly every weekend.Quote:

Well, like all here have said, unless you get lucky you won't. Even if you get lucky and find a decent shape fixer upper, you'll have to pay someone to fix up it, and that will take you over the $100 without a doubt.
I hit flea markets regularly, where I've found some nice (and some not so nice) razors, and am still to find a nice or restorable 8/8. I did pick up a restorable 7/8 wedge on the bay some time ago, but I'm still to send it out to get it prettied up. I believe I got very lucky, but I paid only a couple of sawbucks for it. I was giddy for a couple of weeks, and still get warm and fuzzy when I take it out of the box and handle it.

Finding these big razors for cheap is purely a matter of luck, such as my score from a while ago.

It looks worthwhile, but remember that, given the attraction of larger blades, this razor is very likely to sell for more than $100.00. It will need scales, perhaps, and restoring the blade could cost upwards of $50.00 as well. The real bidding, not to mention the "sniping", tends to occur at the very end of these auctions.

No shortcuts, friend. It's time or money; if you have the money, pay up. If not, hit the estate sales, auction sales, flea markets, garage sales and local antique stores. If you make friends with the vendors at flea markets they'll keep an eye out for you, but you have to show regularly for that.
