This may be an unfair. If you compare a Yamaha to a Martin D28 on looks alone they will be very similar; compare the tones and the Martin will blow you away, whereas the Yamaha won't.
That is a functionality issue, which seems to be the opposite with razors. No matter how you look at it, as long as they have both been correctly honed, the $35 razor is going to serve the same function as the $200 razor, namely shaving whiskers off your face.
If you cant tell the diference, then there is no reason to buy the more expencieve one,if you can then you have your answer
that's exactly what I was thinking when I started. now I've been into wet shaving for about 9 months. I got 12 straight, 3 De, 3 badger,1 boar, 1 synthetic brush,3 strops, 8 hones, 2 scutles, mugs, bunch of soaps, creams, oils and it doesnt seem to stop. I guess you'll never know what's gonna happen to u
This thread already has alot of replies which outline virtually everything that needs to be discussed and more. I will add that 1) I am not a salesman, neither am I here to convince you how to spend your money 2) I will not give weight to anyone's advert in the classifieds over another, neither am I willing to discuss a given price.
It is obvious that scale material, brand, age and condition are all relevant factors. It is the same with any collectible commodity. A 30 dollar razor will give you a great shave and you need never spend another dollar on a razor ever again. It will likely be a no thrills razor. Simple.
no, you won't :p
When I first started I wanted to try razors from the most popular brands to find out what works. I've learned that there are a great variety that shave great.
Grant,
There are several factors that affect the price of a razor, although in the end it all comes back to the supply -v- demand curve.
1) Not all razors shave equally. You might be able to find a $40 razor that shaves as well as a $200 one, and anyone with a half decent collection will have at least one of those. The problem is that you know when you buy a $200 razor that it will shave very well and you don't know if the $40 is going to be great, good, ok or rubbish.
2) Collectability. Some razors are more highly desired because they are seen as more desirable to collect. It is the nature of all collecting.
3) Non 'edge' factors. For some people all what they are interested in is a good shave. Other people want the fancy bells and whistles. A Wade and Butcher in black bakelite scales will sell for less than the same blade in engraved Mother of Pearl scales with silver inlay. Factors like engraving on the spine; engraving/etching on the blade; aesthetically pleasing tang design, gold washes etc. can help drive the price up.
4) Condition of the blade. Many people are happy with a blade that is slightly pitted and clean. A mirror finish is more desirable, partly because of the extreme amount of work someone has to put in to achieve that finish.
5) Honing. It takes a good amount of time to hone a razor to a serious edge. If you aren't doing it yourself you have to pay someone else to do it for you. If you buy a razor that someone else has honed you have to pay for their time and effort in doing so. A $40 razor that will cost you $20 to get honed costs the same as a $60 razor that is genuinely shave ready.
Don't know if i agree with the first point (this is just IMO by the way). it depends what we're talking about, are we talking a new $199 raxor vs vintage $40 one? or new vs new or old vs old?
It could be argued that vintage razors are better made because razor making is a lost art now (to an extent, otherwise no new razors). if its a new vs new, even then i'm not so sure because what adds cost to new razors are scale materials, gold leafing, engraving etc etc.for example my Invisible edge "classic" razor, is made by dovo. Its the same steel as their higher end models, it's a full hollow like many other dovo's ground by the same guy at the factory, so why should i shave less well because of scale materials etc etc.
And as for old vs old? well i guess it depends on condition, but i imagine a lot of good razors cost around the same when new, so a $40 vintage vs $199 is a modern construct defined by a razors "mojo" as i said before. look at genco's, i don't have one, but have read that they used to be dirt cheap NOS but now the price has gone up because people realise how good they are.
well its like buying a car you can get the 500 car that will haul u around or you can get the 50,000 mercades that will haul you around, one just looks better and may be a smother ride, i go for one that persionaly apeals to me and is within my budget, catch my drift? you get what you pay for, then again i bought my most recent truck for 190$ from my grandfather (84 f250 ) and it will pull my other truck around like a tonka toy. so more expensive isnt always better.
forgive my ramble its been a while since i was able to be on srp so i miss rambling.
I am new here...first post. But from my experience paying more will usually yield better build quality. I collect pens, watches, cars, coins, etc and soon razors. I also spend more for my own satisfaction, enjoyment, rarity, etc.
First of all, Welcome to SRP! I'm not sure how far into the game you are, but if you have any questions you've come to the right place.
I do however take some issue with the above statement. Razors come new and they come vintage, so their are two distinct separate markets. The vintage market is different beast, because you have little known brands and well known brands, naturally name recognition will fetch higher prices on the online bidding world. Does paying more equal better quality? No, not really. With good steel and proper honing, one will shave just as well as another. But you do have to be careful what you buy, that will definitely affect the price.
The new razor market is different. You will pay more for brand name for sure, but obviously fancier razors will cost more the the Spartan models. An $80 Dovo special will shave you just as well as a $300 Thiers Issard, but the TI will look a lot better. So in essence you are paying for aesthetics, not functionality. It's unfair to compare a $20 Zeepk, which is a known crappy brand, to a Dovo or TI, because those two brands are known performers.
On the other hand, if you have the disposable income to buy top of the line production or custom razors then go for it. But if you're on a budget and can't afford the "best of the best" all newbs should realize that $$$ doesn't necessarily translate to better shaves. It's the user that determines that.
Be well,
Ryan
He's new and I didn't feel like explaining that to him lol, thank you for saving us lazy guys ;D
Well, I guess I could have told him to go back and read the previous 55 posts.... :w
Alright guys, help me out. I want a 3-4/8 a 6/8 a 7/8 and I already know I want a W&B. 8/8 give me some good cheap advise.
You will not find 6/8 or 7/8 W&B ready to shave for $35 in the classifieds. Which means you'll need to look at other channels - antique shops and online auctions. You'll then have to budget at least another $30 or so to send the razor to be properly honed, which leaves you with about $5 for the razor itself. Considering that shipping to you is $2-$6 means that your chanced of finding said razor for $5 in local antique shop are much higher than finding it for $1-$3 online.
Now that's good advice that you got for free, I don't think you can get it any cheaper than this.
When you want the same thing everyone else wants and the seller knows it, it is not cheap. Posting any cheap alternative will not remain cheap for long.
The best cheap advice I can give you is to be patient, search everywhere and don't pull the trigger until you find what you want and it is in your price range. I don't see where asking everyone else to do this for you is going to result in a low price for more than an instant after it is posted.
It's ok guys, I found these awesome 8/8 straights by this very reputable looking company called "B&B" off ebay . It was such a good deal, I bought two!
