I picked this up a few weeks ago, and showed it to randydance062449, he thinks a new tang was added or modified and I agree. Has anyone else seen anything like this before? The tail is wider than normal and made of brass (or copper). It's strange enough for my permanent collection:p

could be plated? don't think you could weld or forge copper onto an existing broken steel tang
If you look at the first picture you might be able to see the weld/solder or what ever it is.

Acording to GOINS' King of Whiskers was a c 1902 trademark of Washington Cutlery Co, Milwaukee, Wis.
that was done by a welder... that is bronze... they took a razor with a broken tang and built a new one with a oxy/acy torch and bronze welding rods... aka brazing.... then it was shaped back......Quote:

It looks like it is silver soldered. Either way it looks really unique and for that reason I'm sure it has a permanent place in your collection.

If you didn't notice it in the first shave I wouldn't worry. That means the solderer knew what they were doing.
don't mean to argue... but silver solder is just that... silver solder.... brazing uses brass... same basic technique... different filler material... this is brass hence the brazing...

Interesting. That must be a difference in monitors. In mine it looks silver. Either way, as you say similar holding.
I think you and Randy have it figured out. I would just use it and not worry about the joint.
I have never seen a razor that was repaired like that. Somebody in the past was pretty resourceful.

That's my thinking also. Funny thing when I bought it, it was so covered in tarnish and dark grey patina, I thought it was some sort of covered tang. I was quite suprized when I saw what it really was!!
I believe it would be considered a "make do". Fixing broken items that still have a lot of usefulness in them without worrying about staying true to original materials. You see it a lot on tea pots and the like from the 20's to the 60's. Then stuff started to be made to have a short lifespan. There's a lot of cool china tea pots with metal spouts, handles and lids.
Someday I'm gonna learn how to braze. I want to learn to make my own bike frames and I love lugged steel.

Somebody did a nice job repairing that tang. I wouldn't worry about the brazed joint. It should be at least as strong as a welded joint. Somebody REALLY liked this razor. If it were junk, they probably wouldn't have had it repaired. It definitely adds to the character and history of the razor.
It it's silver soldered or silver brazed, I wouldn't worry about it either. Unless you plan on driving the blade into a tree trunk and hanging your anvil from it, it should never come loose.
Did the repair job influence the razor's temper?
It didn't seem too. I was worried about that also, but I'm two shave in and it's still really good.
It's going into my rotation, so we'll see.
