8/8 henckels friodur stainless - are they vintage or not?

So I'm in the market for a new razor and I came across an 8/8 J A Henckels Friodur stainless and I decided to do a little research. Now some of what I've read has said that it may be a regrind/it is rebranded. I'm confused now, it's under the vintage section in classic shaving, so is it a NOS vintage friodur or is it a regrind that's being labelled as 'vintage'? If it is a regrind, I think I'll pass and get something else

The Henckels Friodurs that were sold by Henckels usually have an inlay. Browse through here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...ing-twins.html

From what I read somewhere in the past, not all Henckels were finished in Germany, just the ones stamped Zwillingsworks, or something like that.

There are a lot of Henckels being sold as NOS with plain scales of cheap wood scales. These are from blanks found after Henckels stopped selling the razors and recently ground, not reground. Many of us have at least one of these and they are find shavers. I have one with a spanish point that came in really crappy wood scales. It is a really good shaver. I don't see anything wrong with the one on CS. Maybe someone know different and will post to this thread. From what I know, if you like that razor I would not shy away from it.

Basically there are 3 generations of Henckels out there, that is how I have taken to looking at them

The Vintage ones
The huge 7/8 and 8/8
The brand new ones that just came back on the market...

There is also one that only has 1 man instead of the Twins that seems to be a Henckels also

They all take an edge, and they all shave, how good each of those edges are is pretty much personal opinion... Although the consensus seems to be that the True Vintage Henckels are a bit "Smoother" feeling than the newer ones... but who could prove that ???

I bougth a Friodur 8/8 from Shavingshop a while back, and I have to say it's a fantastic razor, really really good.

Ah I see, so they found a bunch of the blades after the company closed down and have now put an edge and some cheap scales on them. Am I understanding that correctly?

Pretty much. And some put them in great scales as well, like the Robert Williams scales mine has

The company did not close down. They just stopped making straight razors. They are selling straight razors again but I am not sure who is making them. Of the razors we are discussing in this thread, the quality of the scales vary depending on who you purchase the razor from. I would expect the razor listed on the Shaving Shop site are at least decent but I phone call or email to them will get the question answered.

Bit extreme scale for me, but a nice razor.

On topic: Check for grinding marks?
