Thread: Dovo Prima Klang

I mostly have 1/4 and 1/2 hollow blades, but lately I've been thinking of trying a full or extra hollow. Does anyone have a dovo prima klang who could rate its shaving qualities?

Does the extra hollow grind make the blade very flexible?

Have you noticed that it's more or less effective on a heavy beard, as compared to a heavier blade?

Do you prefer to use it on one day growth or does it shave equally smooth on a few days' growth?

I would appreciate any additional info I could get on this blade. Of course, I know it will be subjective, but it helps to hear from others' experience.

Hi mate, I've previously owned a Prima Klang - would describe as an 'OK' razor, but IMO there are better ones out there.

I always found the shave to be close, but if you're accustomed to the heavier grind of a half or quarter, then the extra hollow grind might take some getting used to. General concensus is heavier grinds suit heavier beard growth, so if this is you, perhaps the extra hollow might not be the best choice.

There's a definite difference in feedback through the blade and yes, you'll find the blade has a lot more give in it than those stiffer grinds.

My personal view on Dovo's is they're great starting razors as they're reasonably priced (on the most part), but my PK was a bitch to hone: the edge was a bit crumbly and took forever on a coticule to ease it in. Individual units will of course vary. Not sure what other people's thoughts are here.

How much shaving experience do you have and what kind of razors are you using now?

I've been using a straight for about six months, and I'm pretty good at it. I have a couple of Revisor 6/8's, a Hart 6/8 spike and a couple of nice Shumate spikes that I've restored.

I'd like to try something different, and I'm thinking of a 5/8. I'm also considering a Dovo stainless Micarta or Boker Mikarta.

OK cool, you've mentioned some reasonable brands there in your rotation. IMHO, Dovos (on the most part) won't stack up against what you've already got and although you'll definitely find some good ones, in my experience, they're a bit of a risky investment.

My advice would be there's plenty of 5/8s out there worthy of your $$$ and if cost is a concern, the classified pages here on SRP are a great way of scoring razors with proven pedigree at a reasonable price. However, sounds like you're keen to try the Dovo brand, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'd personally opt for a Boker over a Dovo, but again, this is pretty subjective.

p.s. not hating on Dovo at all, just am more brand loyal to other razors, that's come from experience and owning many razors; all my first razors were 5/8 Dovos. I just found I transitioned away from them as I realised I could get better performing steel...

I keep hearing lots of good things about Dovo stainless blades. Some reviews have said they prefer them to Henckels stainless blades. I've never seen anything against Dovo stainless blades. Any thoughts on that?

To be honest, I've never used the stainless, but I've heard if you get a good one, they can be pretty good in holding an edge (stainless). Therein lies the problem with Dovos, it's a bit hit and miss!

I have two extra hollow's. A 6/8 TI and a 7/8 original schultze. I have a coarse beard with sensitive skin and find that I get my best shaves from the extra's when I have two or three days growth. I own three dovo's all honed by Lynn and find the 6/8 best or 6/8 bismark to be far superior to my 5/8 ebony.

I have a prima klang. I only used it a few times, but it is a good shaver. I would say my beard is thick and wiry. It had no trouble. I have several dovos and each required very little work to turn them into great shavers right out of the box.

I have a Inox, prima klang, bergishcher lowe, and a bismark. The inox, prima klang, and lowe only needed to be taken to a finishing stone (escher) to get them shaving great. I purchased the bismark used and it has some blunting so I haven't rehoned/shaved with it yet.

I'd say the prima klang will be dependable after it is made shave ready for whatever challenges you may have. I have never used the same razor twice in the same week though. I'm confident that anytime I pull any of my dovo's out...that they will be ready for the challenge.

How do you like the Inox? I hear lots of good things about Dovo stainless blades.

All of the Dovo's I have are great shavers.
