Marsh Brothers & Co ROXO Razor

I just picked up this little gem. Razor is in mint condition, no hone marks. The razor was made in Sheffield, England by Marsh Brothers at their Pond Works facility at the beginning of the 1900's.

It has a 6/8+ round pointed, shoulderless blade with a nice deep blade etch and tang stamp and features bottom and top/side jimps for good grip and control. Factory grinding striations are evident and can be authenticated by simply looking at the blade etch, which was done after original grinding! This razor was made with a stiffer grind, quarter hollow. The scales appear to be ivory and are straight, shiny and no cracks with the front scale having a silver inlay of a shield. The silver collarless pins are perfectly tight with a black wedge.

Unfortunately, just a little bit. I definitely wanted two good razors, and I found a great pair with the Joseph Rodgers. I saw the ROXO and decided to grab it because it was a quarter hollow with good Sheffield steel and I wouldn't have to worry about fussing over an untouchable collectible.

The acquisition of the W&B presentation set was just circumstance; the price was right and I felt they needed a guardian that respected collectibles. Will I shave with them, probably here and there, but I've love shaving with the ROXO and the Jos. Rodgers and won't put them down.

Am I done with buying razors - yes, for now. :w

Marsh Bros had their own biographer - Sydney Pollard, who wrote a book about the company in 1954. It was published by Marsh Brothers & Co Ltd at Pond Steel Works and was called "Three Centuries of Sheffield Steel - The Story of A Family Business."

Makes great reading if you ever come across it!

This razor is a great shaver. I put a nice edge on it with a coticule and finished it off with an Escher. The blade is rigid enough to be comfortable and the razor is light enough to maneuver around my face. It has inspired confidence in my shaving. I'm definitely a big fan of vintage Sheffield steel.

That's a very nice razor indeed. Marsh Brothers straights get snapped up on ebay whenever they appear.

You have a very nice find. I have a Marsh Brothers which is an old chopper and is nowhere near as nice as yours. Love the jimps especially.

i found a same brand today. but honed by wrong way. i left it, the seller wanted 20$ for it. it was even not in ivory scales but black horn.

That is gorgeous. I'm a big fan of the stiffer grind, smaller Sheffield razors like this.
