Numbered scales?
Hi All,
I just unpinned this razor for restoration purposes and a number (669) on the inside of the scales just happened to caught my eye, does anyone know what it stands for or if it has meaning at all? It's a Richard Abr. Herder and the inscription on the blade says "Best German Hollow Ground".
Thank in advance.

Just a guess but it may be the mold or pattern number.

Joed+1 I too have run across this with a number or razors over the years. My guess is a mould # and possibly an assembly # for the workers to match the scales to different blanks. Best, wildhog

Another guess is that there were companies that made only the scales who sold them to shops that just performed the finish work on razor blanks after the heat treatment. Of course there where companies like Joseph Rodgers that may have manufactured all of the components to make a complete razor.

Yeah you're probably right that it has something to do with the assembly of the razor because the number is present on both scales.

It's also possible that the two halves were attached together and the pin holes drilled and then screwed or bradded together and finished as a perfect matching set and marked as such. You often see this in guns.
