Talking My Love of the Day!

I love to use a variety of straight razors with different sizes, grinds, and styles. A lot of my enjoyment of shaving comes from contrasting how different razors possess unique qualities and yet all shave very well. Generally, I am in love with whatever razor is in my hand at the moment.

Out of 35 razors, a 6/8 Thiers-Issard Le Grelot has consistently been my favorite razor during the last eight months. However, this week I have been using two 6/8 Hart Steel razors, one polished, round, with jimps and one satin, round, without jimps. I was struck this morning at how smoothly and silently these razors shave. They seem to be the ultimate in comfort.

Sometimes I love hearing the the razor work (Dovo Prima Klang) and sometimes I love the razor to work in absolute silence (Hart Steel). From my experience, if one is looking for a razor to end SRAD, it could well be a Hart razor. They are that good.

Just wanted to share my experience and enthusiasm for this week's favorite.

Looking for THE razor to end SRAD is a sure recipe for never finding it. The key to ending that quest is a change of attitude with respect to acquiring razors. Have I been successful in that endeavor? No but I have cut way, way down on razor acquisitions to the point of maybe a razor or two a year.

Been there, done that as far as picking a favorite razor. What I got out of it is that your favorite will change in time and experience. Lots of silent, smooth shavers out there. Don't like the shave from any one of the quality makers or source of origins, hone it again with different hones or send it to a diffrent qualified person for honing. Gere is my collection. Each one is shave ready. I'm currently shaving through some of the plain Janes again after a year or more in storage. I am pleasantly surprised at how well they measure up to what were my favorites of the past year. Here is my current rotation http://straightrazorpalace.com/membe...n-6-20-10.html I just need one more razor (LOL), that's what I always say and then I find one more that I need. Bottom line is enjoy what ya got. I enjoy the variety of styles and shaves but I can never seem to find the one razor to end the quest. It's too much fun finding the next best razor of the day.

    Straight Razor Acquisition Disorder

I already have acute early stages. I was about to post a thread about rotations. To me, with my limited experience, it seems a shame to only give a razor/brush/soap/cream/asb one day each. Given the time it takes to get to know a new piece of kit, I would think a few days would be a minimum. Maybe a week? I think a 52 razor rotation is a decent goal. Or is that excessive?
    52 razors, 52 creand/soaps, 52 AS

    Never mind the brushes.

Would that be a satisfactory amount?

I see one of these in my future, but probably the 7/8.

I think you make a good point. Personally, I have never looked for the "one" razor to end my SRAD. Instead, I set out a goal of acquiring representative razors from the USA, Germany, France, England, Sweden, and Spain. I have a 7-day razor case and a 28-day razor case, thus my goal of 35 razors. Having met my goal, I do not buy a new razor until I sell one of my current razors.

I regret having brought up "curing SRAD" because it clouded what I was trying to express [that the Hart razor is very good, a current favorite, and my favorites frequently change].

I couldn't agree more. As I use my razors, I love each one of them. When properly honed, they ALL provide great shaves. If for some reason, I could only have one razor, I could be happy living with any one of the 35. That said, I was so struck this week by how smoothly and comfortably the Hart Steel razors shave, that I wanted to share my thoughts. IMO, the Hart can compete with the very best.

I am glad that you caught that part of the point of my post was to express that my "favorite" changes. There is no absolute razor for me. Most of the time, when I am shaving with any one of my razors, my thought is, "You know, I could get rid of all my other razors and be pretty happy with just this one." I can truthfully say that about all 35 of my razors.

    Happy Shaving!

Don't forget Russia and Japan! In regarded to the hart I also find them to be excellent although my recent 7/8 square point was seriously lacking in fit and finish compared to my Baxter (by hart) 6/8 square. That said what it lacked in fit and finish was compensated by it's shaving ability. I would consider looking into a kamisori style Japanese razor, I have a custom based on a traditional kamisori that shave similarly to a Hart but because of the completely different technique is uniquely different to use.
