I have been using a razor from whippeddog, a 5/8 tonisonal gem. I am looking at buying a new razor, (preferably American made) is their much of a learning curve to a 7/8? I think I'd like to have a heavier razor.
Pros? Cons?

only learning curve IMHO is to get used to the size of the blade everything else is the same. Size mainly matters when you shave the upper lip, at least for me.
It is quite different to shave with but if you're comfortable with a 5/8, then it won't take long to get used to it.
+1 to the above comments. You've already completed the steepest part of the learning curve, with a 7/8 it's just a case of getting used to the difference.
I rarely shave with anything less than 8/8. It's been months since I did, but I've never noticed any difference at all, even under the nose on the upper lip. They are more fun to use.
i find i enjoy the > 6/8 blades way more than the < 6/8s... way more.. it feels more substantial in balance and that currently is a razor quality i prefer.
I went from a 5/8 to a 6/8 and really didn't notice a difference. My latest is a 7/8 and it just feels like a cleaver in my hand. I don't know if it's the scales or the blade itself but I was intimidated at first. Too, my Friodur is a 5/8 that feels gigantic; those Henckels blades are substantial. As mainaman pointed out, the only differences I've noted are that the learning curve is a bit steeper with the larger blades.

If you are looking for more heft, why not try a 5/8 wedge? I am cleaning up a 7/8 now that I plan to use, so I don't have any experience with anything larger that 6/8. But I do love a wedge.
Have a 10/8 comming today,that should be interesting:)
