Hey Gang;
If any of you know Japanese and/or can ID this set of three Japaneses str8's I'd really apprectiate it...these are just more pictures of the same set that I'm trying to find out about...curiosity is still getting the best of me...thanks.
Mod note: I merged the two threads into one since they are of the same items.
Obviously , just old junk . You can send them to me , and I'll pay the shipping , and give you 20 bucks for your trouble . Of course I'm joking :D . I can't translate Japanese , but I have to tell you , that set has "pegged the needle" on my "cool meter" !
thanks @Joed...I actually tried to post all of the pics in one "question" but the site only allows 10 pictures per post...you merging the posts was really helpful and makes perfect sense...
@Dave...thanks for the offer... :hmmm: ...but I'll politely decline...lol...I've wanted to "research" the set ever since I got it...I actually know someone who speaks fluent Japanese but knows nothing of straight razors...she's in the Air Force and I worked with her out here but I didn't have the set at the time...wondering aloud if she'd be open to at least translating if I no one here is able to...I've also though about wrapping the handles with 550 cord but then they wouldn't fit in the slots...anyhoo...thanks to any and all that may help...hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving...have a great shave...Rich
If JimR doesn't see your thread, you oughta PM him. I bet he'll be able to shed some light on your dilemma. He translated mine for me.
I sent you a PM about it. I'm not really a "tech teaching" savvy person, so I didn't want to put it here. The last time I tried to advise somebody about navigating the site, I got it all wrong. So, it may or may not be good info. I just kinda do it, and can't really explain it so well. It's one of those things you can figure out, if you can figure out how to wrap text. It's just that the icon is somewhere else. Namely, the Japan section, or type JimR into the search box and it'll show you all his posts. From there, I think you could get it. HTH
Well if nothing comes of it in a couple days, then let me know through your post here, and I'll PM him for you. I can do it, I just can't explain how so well. lol.
The bottom (箱) says: box, bin, case, chest etc
The middle (刀) says: knife, swoard etc
I cant work out the top word, you will need JimR for that last (top) one but i got you most the way there
So you have: something?? knife box
I have just worked out the last one
The top (剃) says: shave
So it says: (剃刀箱) shave knife box. Fairly obvious lol
The box, as the man said, says "Razor box" or, if you want the Japanese Pronunciation, "Kamisoribako."
The razors are unstamped and poorley formed--I'd reckon they are sheaply mass-produced razors, probably from wartime?
I'm more interested in the space at the bottom. Is that a stone? Did you stumble on a barber's box with the STONE included? :dropjaw:
@JimR...thanks for the reply...you're probably on the right track with the razors...I've seen others (from this site and on the web) that look to be formed/welded and ground down to the final shape with both the shiny metal and the black metal...I've actually been considering getting one but at this time they're a bit steep in price for my bank acount..anyhoo...these indeed look to be made from a single piece that has been stamped out of stainless maybe...can't tell for sure though...the previous owner(s) put a bevel on the flat side too so I'm having a bit of difficulty getting them sharp but...the "hollowed" side is more of an angle than a round "hollow" as is normally the case...I'll take some close ups if it'll help you to help me...that space in the bottom IS for a stone as reflected in the pictures that is two sided (tannish hue and a grayish hue respectively) so I guess that it's different grits or whatnot...hard to tell by rubbing them with my fingertips...that stone did indeed come with the set as did the smaller, glossy black stone that fits in the compartment on the top next to the razors on the right...
thanks to all who helped shed some light on this...I've meant to take some pictures of the razors but we're having connectivity issues out here...typical...as soon as things are resolved I'll get them out and we'll conclude this epsicode of "Japanese Razor Mystery 2012"...lol
