favorite razors

Hello out there! This should be a nice can to open. . .:w
Out of curiosity, and a desire to understand the finer points of razors, what are some of your favorite razors and why?
I just got a Morley and Sons, and I really like it (could it be that its the only one I have shave sharp?) I'm still learning how to hone, and am thinking of some ebay purchases for that purpose, but it would be nice if, after using the razor to learn the (seemingly) delicate and tedius process of honing, I would have something really nice to shave with too.

I generally prefer Sheffield steel but ironically I have lots of solingens lying around as well. I've already talked enough about my favourites to make everyone sick, but here's a steel with not much of a rep but I got a great shaver out of it for under $10.. It's called The Winner. I've seen a few more on e-bay.

My two favorite razors are also the only 2 that I use on a regular basis. Both Sheffield steel and damn sharp.

Worldmaster 6/8 SS
Thiers Issard 7/8 SS Red Stamina

They do wonderfull shaves. The difference is in the price though. One I got for around $20 and the other for $140 but hey! Once I'll put some work into the Worldmaster it'll look like a $100

I have a couple of nice brands (dubl duck, W&B, revisor, etc) but my favorites are my Bill Ellis custom, my Black King and my plain black no frills Genco.

Those three, hands down, give me the best shaves.

Current favorite shavers (not that big on looks):
- Badaud 6/8 1/4 wedge barbers notch w/ horn scales I got from Joe Chandler
- Dubl Duck Goldedge 6/8 round point I got from Robert Williams

But there are others I am still honing, and when I get them ready this might change... High hopes for a 7/8 W&B wedge, several Pumas, others... And still others I have to receive...

Basically, I do not buy a razor if I don't think it has the potential to be a great shaver or just looks pretty to me.

I think I've given up trying to answer that question because the fact is any quality razor can give the best shaves. The ones than to me have given the most consistant shaves and are easy to maintain; Duble Ducks, Pumas, TI's W+Bs but not the wedges as far as ease of maintainance goes and I just got an Eye Brand and I'm very impressed with it.

I don't use my own razors... can't afford them... :roflmao

My favorite razor of all time is a 3-pin 13/16 Nicar Speciale Remes #72 with Solingen steel.

I like the other two of his customs as well...

I gravitate towards:

• Wostenholm
• Wade Butcher
• Henckels
• Rogers
• Wilkinson
• Puma

Not making my list doesn't mean a razor is not a good one... it's just not on my personal list of favorites. Dorko is a pretty darn good razor. Variety ~ spice of life, so to speak.

There are many more good razors out there, but they all can't make the A team... :nj

OK it's just that I now have 4 of them and they have become my favorites. From 3/8 to 15/16th. 3 of the 4 are all NOS.

8/8 INOX Henckles
7/8 Wade and Butcher Wedge
6/8 Round Point Goldedge
5/8 Round Point Wonderedge

I have a favorite in the making right now that im basically bring back from the dead, but its almost a 12/8 wedge, high grade stainless that will be cryotreated where I get my engine parts cryotreated....should become my favorite quickly:)

My purpose in my original question is twofold. One, which your excellent replies have so far answered well, is what types of razor some of you experienced shavers use. But I am interresting in knowing why you like them so much. What makes a go to razor a go to razor? Ease of honing? The shape? Stiffness, or lack of stiffness (some seem to prefer a stiffer blade than others?) How does a wedge differ from a hollow ground? Is it just looks? That would surprise me, though, because most of you, for all your collection habits, seem to be pretty pragmatic when it comes to actually using a razor. What about the tip? Round, square, french, barber's?
So what makes the difference for you?:thinking:

It really depends on your facial growth and the feel that you like. In my case I have medium growth and I like maneuverable blades, so I generally go for 5/8 delicate full hollow ground blades.

For me it's really hard to answer. I will
have to say that of the 10 razors that
I have bought - I have been satisfied
with all of them. Why was I attracted
to any particular razor.....:shrug:

The main thing with a razors is....
It has to be shave ready.

I wish that I could give a better answer.

My beard is heavy and coarse.
If I do a full hollow ground blade, it has to be at least 6/8 to stiffen it up and help it cut the beard.
I love my wedge cause of the blade stiffness.

I keep a 15 razor rotation. They range from an 8/8 to a 4/8, true wedge to full hollow. My favorite? Tough call. Each of them shave magnificently when they are properly honed and stropped. Most of them shave best either the second or third shave after honing and don't return to the hone until after 7 to 10 shaves. I guess my favorite is the most recent razor I've used that is in that 'sweet spot' :y , a perfectly comfortable, effortless shave.
