Dubl Duck Massacre

I know the following statement will be frowned upon in this fine establishment. Is the Dubl Duck razors popularity a hype?

For a few months now I have tried and tried to master my Dubl Duck Satinedge restored and honed by the great gssixgun. But I simply cannot get a nice shave with it. I prefer heavier razors like my Butchers, but I also like my smaller and even lighter swedish razors. I can also get a better shave with my french razor. I do not own nor have I ever tried another german razor.

Anyone else with similar thoughts about the Two Ducks, I can not find anything but praise here on the forum.

Dubl Duck makes fine razors that consistently prove to hone easy and shave well. The hype comes from their consistence quality, the write ups they receive on the forums and the easy name to remember. I have a bunch of razors that shave as well or better then the Ducks I have. If you are not happy with the razor you sould see if you can return it. If you can't, I would send it to another person to have it re-honed unless you feel qualified to hone it yourself. Good luck.

You don't give much in the way of detail regarding what is wrong with it, what its problems are. Is it not sharp, rough, hard to maneuver, doesn't remove whiskers, leaves nicks and razor burn? What is bad about your shaves with it?

It's prob a very different beast compared to your other, more stiff, razors. I don't know how long you've shaved with a straight, but if not long, I would hang on to it and get back to it 6 months from now. One of my best razors are a DD made by Puma, but I've had others that's not as good, even though still competent razors.

Edited: Of course it could be something wrong with your razor, but it's hard to tell from the pic and if you maybe could explain why you think it shaves bad ...

This razor is as sharp as can be expected when honed by gssixgun, it is in superb shape in other words. It removes my whiskers as my other razors but the feeling of it is off. I can not seem to get as good feedback from this razor as others and it does not maneuver that well. Have been shaving with a straight for 3 years now and it may be that my capabilities is not up for it. Will keep it though and try it out now and then.

Maybe just another personnality to get ussd to. One of the things i enjoy.:gl:

I've run across 'trophy' blades I just couldn't get to perform. They're rare, but happen. Chances are probably high that I simply failed to find the proper recipe to unlock the edge's goodness.

I've honed and shaved w/ 4 Satinedges. Like Joed, I have razors that shave better and cost less, but I can't say I've had a bad one from a Satinedge. Being extra hollow (the 4 I tried were .0075" thick above the bevel), you may be responding to the feel of an extra hollow - which demands (and rewards) a very light touch. It may also be the type of edge - rather than its level of keenness. I would agree - if Glen did it, its keen. He would have sent a page with the razor that indicated what stone(s) he used. If you're used to the uber smooth, face-friendly feel of the heavy grind w/ smooth finishes, an extra hollow is a pretty big change. Do you have? Enjoy? any other extra hollows?

I would tend to agree that your tastes and techniques may evolve to where you tried the Duck 6 mo down the road and suddenly discover its wonderful. It happens. I've migrated to the spastic extremes myself, prefering both the heavy grinds and the extra hollows.

Pls. post more about your perceptions and issues w/ the wayward waterfowl.

Also I have to stress that I do not blame Glen for this as I know this razor is in better shape than most of my others (besides the other two he rescued for me). This is between me and the DD.

An extra hollow is most def a different feel and may take some getting used to,

I just got my first 2 Extra hollow razors last week (2 Genco's from Pinklather) and while the first shave was a different experience, I have quickly learned to LOVE them.

When I got them, PL warned me that they demand a light touch and he's not kidding, it took me a shave or 3 before I got the hang of them, but now that I do, I really find myself not wanting to shave with anything BUT an extra hollow... It actually gives me great feedback (I know I have the correct angle when I can hear the razor "sing") in the space of a few days they have become my hands down favorite razors.

But everyone is different, not everyone is going to love an Extra Hollow, some prefer full wedge etc, its all personal taste, so give this razor a few more tries, if it's not for you then it's not for you, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the razor, it just means it's not the razor for you

Hopefully its just the "getting to know you" phase that is causing the issue.

That Satinedge looks almost identical to mine. It was my first straight razor, the one I learned to shave with. As has been mentioned, extra hollow blades do require a slightly different technique. Mine shaves great, but it's a light razor and I do find that it prefers less growth, so if I haven't shaved in a few days I usually reach for a heavier razor.

I also have a 7/8 Wonderedge, which is just as thin but significantly heavier. I find it mows down whiskers a touch better, so weight is definitely an asset.
