On a recent post someone asked what my favorite straight was,and was it an obscure brand. As I have said in other posts my favorite is Gottlieb & Hammesfhar,which made me google to see if there were any for sale,there werent, which made me think "are they that obscure?"
How many members here have one? I have four,and dont see them come up for sale very often, and since they have been around since the 1700s
(thanks Glen) I was wondering why there arent more of them. Anyone else have any?

Sorry my German is off,but just one? And your in Israel ? they may be the rarest of the rare. I know that gssixgun made one for someone and he's shaved with at least one,and said he liked it,but you would think that a company that was making them in the 1700s,there would be more around, I love mine and wouldn't sell them for anything.Quote:

I don't think they're super rare, though certainly not w&b that's everywhere you look. I used to see them when I was buying more razors and I have one of them somewhere.
gugi-all I can say is that there aren't very many replies and the members here are very good at helping someone out.As you said you might have one around somewhere,and there not listed like the W&Bs, which are everywhere,heck even Filharmonicas are easier to find. Its just bugging me as I like them and find them to be made of a high quality steel,and they take a wicked edge,and give the best shave out of my collection,and that's not even the reason its bugging me, THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SO LONG THAT I CANT GET MY MIND AROUND THE FACT THAT THERE SO HARD TO FIND !!!!! (That wasn't yelling,just excitement) and I would like to make a seven day set of them. Where are they????????Quote:

Well, the company's been around a long time, but it doesn't mean they made that many razors. Zee-pk, B&B, Master USA, etc. have been around only for few years and their razor shaped objects are everywhere :)
Filarmonicas are not rare at all, they're just hyped up to the sweet spot where the supply&demand maintains a very stable high price. I think a couple of years ago somebody listed 20-30 filarmonicas at the same time on ebay and they sold at around $100. When those have reappeared afterwards on ebay/classifieds one at the time I think they were selling for the more typical $300-$400.
I think most W&Bs are vastly overrated too, and many less available razors are vastly underrated. The point is that a lot of it is determined by the way the market works. I'd wager that if you see 5 consecutive weeks of really nice Gottleibs sell on ebay for $100-$300 all of a sudden a lot more of them will appear. But if you wait few months until this thread gets forgotten and list some of yours they'll fetch the same as any other made in germany razor in similar condition.

There were a great number of companies and they made hundreds of thousands of razors.
And only some models of razors, not companies, are really rare.

I've posted it as an example of rare razor. About a year and a half the price of the razor was around 900 USD. At that time I couldn't find funds.
That razor with the fancy scales is tuckmar. I wonder though if the scales are original to it as they're way too fancy for what I've seen on these razors.

I figured I would update this post, since I first started it I now have seven, finally got my set.Three are on this post and I have acquired a Nirosta that's it better shape than the one pictured here,and one seven eights that's waiting to go to glen for some new scales.I still look for them but they are still hard to find,or maybe its just my luck,although I picked up a Dorko which shaves almost the same,at least to my mug,YMMV.
