What grind do you prefer on a razor? I seem to get a better feeling shave off a half hollow ground.
1/4 hollow to full hollow is my range.
Quarter-hollow for me!
It all depends on the size for me. I like my sub-5/8 razors in wedge. My 5/8 and 6/8 in full hollow and extra hollow. Over 6/8 I like in 1/4-1/2 hollw. Doesn't really help you out does it?:)
I prefer quarter hollow, but I wont kick the others out of bed!
If we had been allowed multiple choices I would have said half, quarter, and wedge. I have plenty of full hollows and I do shave with them but I like the heavier grinds better. Of the heavier grinds I might have a half that I like better than a quarter or vice versa. Or there might be one or another wedge that I like better than one or another half or quarter. Lots of variables within the rotation.
Yeah I was thinking about multiple choice but figured It wouldn't show any interesting data because everyone would check most of them. Instead just vote on the grind of your favorite razor and yes I know it's hard to choose such a thing but that is why you can explain in this thread what you can't express in the poll. :)
Yes, love them all...well, I'm not a major fan of a true wedge only because of how much of a PITA it is to hone and strop...
So far I've only tried 1/2 hollows and full hollows, but I'll say that for whatever reason I enjoy the shave from my full hollow vintage razors more than my half hollow TI Super gnome.
Then again, because of that this could just as easily have been a New vs. Vintage poll for me, or regular vs super high carbon content :p
Extra Hollow of late :)
Since my skin is smooth but my whiskers are strong, I prefer wedges. They reduce the risk of scratching my skin and increase the shaving precision. And, I like they're silent!
Why do you find them to be a pain to strop? Just curious.
I voted full hollow....for now. I purchased my first wedge not too long ago. Not sure what I think about it. For whatever reason the ingrown hairs returned after I started using it. Not sure what thats about....
That sounds more about technique with using a newly acquired razor. I get the best shave off of my half hollow Torrey. I think I like my half hollow because it gives less resistance through longer whiskers. But then again I think my Torrey is my favorite and best shaver all together, would like to get some more Torreys!
Definately a wedge!
Out of my 3 razors only one is full hollow and it gives a very close shave in few passes but can be difficult on final touch ups vs my other two half hollows that I require a couple passes to get the same closeness. Granted I have very little to compare with, it mostly depends on what shape my face is in. Have not had the pleasure of trying a wedge or near wedge. I voted half hollow
I prefer quarter or half. I have a quarter hollow Genco that blows my beard away.
xMackx,
Half-hollow for me :)
Have fun !
Best regards

We need "all of the above".
The thicker grinds hone slower but better as a beginner.
The full hollow hone quickly with almost no effort.
IMLE, The very very full hollow and singing blades
hate a heavy hand that works fine on the heavy
blades.
In a handful of double duck razors the thin Wonder edge
are very different from the Special N°1 when
honing. Correctly sharpened both shave well
with the Wonder edge edging out the others.
There are more than four grinds. Some full hollows are
much thicker than others.
For me, how straight & even the grind is, is more important than what style the grind is.
Super hollow and singing thank you.
But a nice smooth 1/4 is awesome as well. :)
I like a good 1/2 hollow. However, as with everything in life, variety is the spice!
I would have to say 1/4 hollow to wedge because of the weight and quietness, but I do like all the way up to full hollow.
Either full hollow or extra hallow:beer1:
Full hollow for me please, but one day I need to at least try a wedge so I know what the other realm is talking about.
Ya know, As much as I love my "Caruso" blades, there is something about a nice wedge that just seems smoother when I have gone a long time without shaving. Of course, Now you need to get into the different "wedges" Bid dif between an Adoration Ax, a Reynolds, and a SatinWedge~
Half Hollow Ground

That is crazy, as my ingrowns cane back when I left the wedge for a while.

The old sheffiel wedge is the best
A dead straight extra hollow with some extra weight in the spine makes a great combination.
If the are sharp its ok for me. 'm not so concerned what kind of grind the are...love them all,
