dubl duck size question

I was messing around on the bay and ended up coming across these two. I ended up being on the winning side of the 5/8 square point (the second link). I was eyeing the 3/4 square point but the price kind of took me back a bit. Any advice from you guys out there I can make a deal with the seller for the other if need be but I figured what I paid was pretty reasonable for a mint duck. Is there that much of a different between the two size I am newer to SR and am trying to build a nice collection, I got the RAD.

Honestly, that extra 1/8" won't make much of a practical difference, other than the fact a larger razor can scoop additional lather. It becomes personal preference, but both are fine razors and at those prices I wouldn't have a problem sacrificing an eighth of an inch to save well over $100. The 5/8 will do you just fine. JMHO.

Oh, FYI - in the wetshaving community we don't call it 3/4", it's 6/8. Don't ask why, it's just the way it is.... :)

Thanks for the input I had a feeling that was the right thing to do. I had a feeling it wasn't 3/4 and should be 6/8 but that is how the seller listed it

I dunno but I've never seen a mint Goldedge that didn't have a gold plated tang.
Also you can see the overruns where he applied the blue enamel.
Probably not what you wanted to hear. :shrug:

Well I didn't pay for it yet are saying its not legit?

yup ,as stated above,you need to have a gold plated tang on that for sure

It depends on how you define 'mint'. A very nice restoration does not make it mint.
Mint implies as new to me & it ain't that without a gold tang for starters.

I guess in the seller's defence he called it "minty' but I have no idea what that means.

Mint and minty are two words that are used a lot on ebay, huh?

There are a few sellers of tools (which I buy more of than razors) who will describe a tool as "minty" despite finish loss, pitting, surface rust, etc.

Most of the people who use the terms in tools know better, but they are also aware that stretching definitions on ebay increases the ending price. Unless ebay does something about it, it won't change. And it's in ebay's best interest for the ending prices to be as high as possible.

Looks very "funny" to me. The blue is very bright but there is no gold wash.....strange.

I talked to the guy and he said that it is a restoration an te gold came off while cleaning an he re-enamels the writing. I figure all that matters to me is the edge and it's shaving capability.

That's way too much for a goldedge. Wonderedges are more sought after and they arent that expensive. I would check the sold section of the classfieds to see what they have been going here....in shave ready condition. I'm pretty sure one got sold a short time ago.

IMO, the larger blades are easier to strop, easier to keep the blade on the strop and not lift the spine. I prefer 6/8 or larger on everything, but that's just me. I might sacrifice an eighth of an inch to save $100 too, but then again, if you have OCD like I do, that 1/8 of an inch makes all the difference in the world... :)

What makes the goldedge what it is, is the gold.

If you are going to do a restore and clean it up and go to the trouble of redoing the enamel on the name you should have it replated too. To me it just doesn't look right-real half a**ed job.

Of course I'm sure it's still a great shaver.

"Mint" is something that some people put in their ice tea and " Minty" is the way that it makes the tea taste...Thats about it for those two words.I never trust them ! Just educate yourself, Which you are doing.Thats the right way. ALWAYS ask questions of the seller if you arent satisfied with the way things are represented.Make sure you have several pictures of the edge and of BOTH sides from heel to toe................Good Luck.....Sounds as if you are completely on the right track !

Consider yourself lucky, but hardly typical. These two ads clearly show that Wonderedge prices are not on the decline.

Those prices are wayyyyy excessive. Are those blades NOS? Those are grimreaper prices. I guess $300 isn't totally horrible if the razor is in excellent shape. I wouldn't pay that. Mine are excellent shavers, but they aren't that much better than the goldedges or even the common satinedges.

youve got to careful- I saw the blades you are talking about,and passed, however I saw a "Minty" NOS Filharmonica (sic) and in the pictures you could see the hone ware and told him so,and got an answerin broken english, and that was bogus as I have communicated with him before,and got the answer "What ees this hone ware???" so be CAREFUL.

I have seen this razor in person (the seller lives near me) and will say it is in great condition although as others have stated the blue was RE-applied after the restore! His collection is HUGE but often times over priced for me although I have bought from him personslly and over eBay just won 2 yesterday (one by .01) I wouldn't call this a mint condition DD but it is a beautiful restore although I would prefer it sans the blue since there is IMHO no way to keep the original blue and NOT have the gold. PM me if you want more info on the seller...I am in no way associated with the seller but have experience working with him and his collection

Also for what it's worth I have 2 round point wonderedges and neither were that expensive both in GREAT shape and the NOS Goldedge I have also wasn't that much

Just make sure that when something comes with compromises a collector wouldn't accept that you pay "user" price for it.
