Sanssouci Razor Arrived.. anyone seen these markings before?

Ebay special Sanssouci Solingen NOS arrived today. I was excited for this.. as I've heard it's a good shaver.

Must say, I was a bit disappointed, as the razor is quite different than the one pictured on ebay. The graphic on the blade is completely different.. and not as interesting.. the point that was pictured was roundtip.. this is obviously not.. and there is a marking that I can't really figure out on the back of the tang.. maybe one of you guys have seen this before.

Anyway.. I wrote to the seller.. I'll let you guys know what his suggested resolution is. Kinda peeved.

that is crap! I remember you posting about the razor originally and that is not even close to what you posted! im not sure as to how it will shave or anything but just the fact of them not describing it properly would be enough for me to want to send it back! let us know what you decide....I can't help with the markings though

Sleek, I'm just frustrated by the misrepresentation. I don't plan on returning it.. especially after I just had a shave with it! BTW I see you're from Ontario.. Toronto area?

fair enough, enjoy it...I will say that it is an attractive razor regardless of the story

Could have been an honest mistake, one time an ebay seller sent me some non-fire resistant ACU pants when I'd ordered the FR version and he insisted I keep the cotton ones while he sent the ones I had originally ordered free of charge. Some times ebay is a wonderful place.

It still is a nice razor. If it is not what was auctioned and you like it, then awesome deal. Its all about how it performs and if you feel it was worth it. Sellers sometimes make honest mistakes. I have had a few issues with sellers too. The worst feeling in the world is waiting for your razor and it not being what you wanted.

UPDATE:

So I wanted to get the update out there "straight" away. The seller contacted me this morning, and explained that he neglected to actually open the razor and instead just looked at the scales. He apologized and has already sent the other razor in the mail, and told me to keep the one I already received.

This is much more than I expected, and I have to say I still have faith in humanity after this.. after all.. he's a straight razor guy.. should I have expected any less?

Moral of the story, glad I didn't go banana's before I heard from him. Good advice from the guys on the forum, and I told the seller I'd be happy to buy from him again in the future. (and I most certainly will.)

Have had the same issue with the same seller (wrong razor) He has always more than made up for it.
He may get a little confused at times,But an honest seller.

Indeed Joe, indeed. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the seller and how it all turned out. I'll buy another off him someday just because of how he handled it.

I will repeat what I said on the other Sanssouci thread. Mine is a 13/16 with the white scales, and I love it. Could be my best shaver and worth the price. I'm still not sure of the real story behind these blades, and some other buyers may not be happy, but IMO the blade is top quality.

Great outcome. He must have a sizable number of them to let you keep the first one.

Agreed. It's too bad I can't offer a true review of the shave quality though.. as I have next to no experience to compare it to.

There are good sellers on Ebay. I bought a large decal for my car. I botched a small part of it. I wrote the seller asking him if he could remake a small part of it, failing that, the single side.

I was expecting to pay for it. He not only remade the part, he mailed it to me, no charge! He didn't even bother telling me that he had done it for free. I will definitely buy something for my wife's car now.

Hello all, first post here but thought I would add my .02. I bought one of the same razors from the seller which arrived pretty quickly. Mine looked like the one shown in the auction posting. Prior to purchase I exchanged a few messages with the seller. He told me these were re ground blanks from Henckels, dating back to the 70's. He explained they were given to an old razorsmith in exchange for some work he did for them. From what I understood in the messages, this person operates a shop out of his home and this is where the razors came from.

I tend to believe these are German blanks. My razor has the "Sanssouci, Solingen Germany" etched on the back of the tang. It is very faint, but I can see the remnants of lettering which had been stamped, not etched, underneath. Much of the lettering is gone, but I can still make out the letters "rmany," which I can only assume was "Germany."

Either way, I really liked the razor. I ran a few laps on a pasted strop, and it shaved great (granted this was only my 6th straight razor shave......EVER).

Anyway, hope this was useful information, and a big thanks to all who contribute to this forum. It has certainly been a wealth of much needed information!!

His explanation seems very credible to me. The original Ebay listing said they Henckles blanks, then that description was later removed. Thanks for the update.

These are Manfred Stengels razors. His website (manyrazor - Home) has been up and running for years. The Sanssouci Solingens seem relatively new. I have had several dealings with Manfred. He is one of the good guys imo. I have one of his 6/8 Sanssouci Solingens and love how she shaves. I think he has quite a few razors on fleabay. I could not resist a couple more. Went back and got the blue and red scaled ones as well to good a price to pass up.

Gentlemen, I just received 2 of these razors from Germany today. They could not be more perfect and are exactly as Manfred represents them to be. I do not know if any are left on the bay but if there are you cannot go wrong! Beatiful straight razors. : - )
