First razor,, great expectations,, Am I starting to get insane??

Hello guys

Finally I ordered my first straight razor,, a very difficult decision,, dovo, boker, TI, mastro livi, Custom, vintage, the winner was a TI Le Grelot in Ram´s horn,, will be my first straight, and what a blade!! it looks so beautyful in pictures, a good quality strop, silvertip brush, very nice shaving creams and aftershave balm,,, and I´m very excited, I have read so much about this I think I´m pretty well informed,, (in theory)......

But my family is starting to worry about me,,, I mean It was a purchase of about 500.00 bucks!!,,, and I am planning (if this is really for me) to start a little collection of razors,, so I´m staring to wander if this is a normal thing...

But whatever.... I purchased something that will last a lifetime... and not spent that money in a stupid cell phone or something similar that works for a few months and then its value is almost nothing

Of course!! Its not only about straight razors, some folks would rather go to the casino and spend that money, but if its makes you feel good that all that matters!! Enjoy!
But if your family needs bread on the table and they cant because of your purchase well thats insane!!

Wow you really hit the ground running, I'm also a new member and purchased myself a Thiers Issard that I picked up from The Art of Shaving. I'm very satisfied and excited about my new hobby! Since I now have the bare minimum (stop, shaving mug, badger brush, shaving cream, aftershave) I can finally start exploring new products. Its also awesome that there are so many eperienced members here in this great forum. As far as your initial investment cost, you're correct about spending it on something thats functional and necessary. Good luck my friend!

And don't start talking about "it will last a lifetime". That just means your kids will have to sell it, and likely take a loss, after you die.<g>

It was a positive thing that you shared the purchase with your family. A lot of guys wouldn't have.
It's also a good thing that you did so your wife can be there for your first save. She can help stop the bleeding and if it really gets bad she can call 911.(:-).

Yes Johnus,, I shared the purchase with them,, even though my girlfriend absolutely didnt like the whole thing saying *but its just a blade and a pice of plastic with animal hairs attached to it,, thats too much!!* but if this was about going to the mall and fancy restaurants its not too much,, hahaha

Just few days ago I caught me on the thought that when I told my wife about new purchases I'm a little underestimate the value of the products. I know that this is bad, but I can't stand that reproachful look on her face...but when everything arrive, I know that she is really happy to see my happy, and she did not feel sorry for the money

No, my foray into the field was close to that as well...mind you everything seems to be ridiculously expensive "down under." I was lucky, as my first razor was free....but soon after I purchased another that certainly wasn't free....or cheap..

Either way, it's all relative. As long as you can comfortably afford the purchase, it should be okay.

I did the exact same thing a week ago. After 3 weeks of trolling this site and B&B and bought a TI Le Grelot, Simspon PJ1, STD Strop, hand thrown mug, D.R. Harris soap and aftershave. I have 3 shaves under my belt now, each one has gotten better. I figured that I'll just shell out the money for good equipment and then I only have to buy it once and the investment will force me to stick with it.

Bravo Carlo,, I ´d like to have your opinion about that razor,, as a novice like me (I havent shave with it yet though) how was your experience with Le Grelot?? many people says is a marvelous shaver....

Ah man, another one!!! My friend, welcome to the club!

I started with a single set also, then had to add another strop, then I needed just one more razor. Well, maybe another razor so I can have 2. Well, maybe they all don't shave the same, so maybe I needed 3. These 3 don't make me completely happy, so now I need a better strop and maybe a barbers hone to go with it.

I need more after shaves, more soaps, maybe more colognes, more barbers hones. Wait, I'm getting tired of these 4 razors, I should get at least one more. Wow, this one is kind of ugly, so I should learn how to restore them. Wow, now that I know how to restore them, I should get another one that needs restored and maybe I'll sell it. Nah, now that its restored it looks to nice to sell.

Wow, I don't have a full weeks worth for a rotation, maybe I should get one or two more. Wow, now I've spent a lot of money having them honed too, perhaps I should learn to hone them. Wow, now that I can hone them and care for them myself, I should get a couple of more. Wait, I need more AS and EdT's, too!!

How about another strop to go with them? Oh wow, I could really use a bench buffer to keep them looking good too!

A couple of razors rolls would be nice to keep them in. Man, now I have empty slots! I better get a couple more to fill those empty slots!

I need to try some of that soap that guy posted about now!! That brand was good, maybe a should get a few more varieties from them, try all their stuff.

Wow, that new razor really shaves well, I should get a couple more of those so this one isn't lonely! I hope SWMBO doesn't mind that I've taken over this bathroom with all my shaving stuff. Oh, the car won't mind staying outside in the winter cuz I need the garage to work on all my razors too! Now I need a new bench seat so I can work comfortable!

To be completely honest, I think getting Le Grelot for your very first razor is extra-ordinary.
My razor purchasing addiction came from getting the 10 dollar razor first, and then wondering for months how much better that 100 dollar razor would be. Getting the next level up razor has been the small joys in my life.

Since you gone and done bought that Le Grelot, you may not need to buy any more razors. So that is a good thing for you purse.

But you still need to get the 1k, 5k, 10k, (maybe some naturals), extra coarse DMT as a lapping stone, strops, and then some abrasives. Again, I recommend getting them slowly as they will become the small joys in your life, and will give the family some time to get accustomed to your new life style.

Hi there, and welcome to the obsession. No, you're not insane (well, you might be, I'm not a doctor), in fact in fact I agree with your comments on a SR Vs a mobile phone. Maybe soon you'll get a nice vintage razor too! You certainly could spend the money on things that are more transient and offer less lasting enjoyment.

[EDIT], I just saw Charles quoted my post, how cool!

The Le Grelot seems like a great razor to me. I've only shaved with it three times so far, today will be my forth. It feels smooth, and paired with the desert ironwood scales it looks beautiful. I feel that its a very good razor.

The stones will be the next thing to purchase as I have two old straights that I bought at an antique store a long time ago. They both need honed so they'll be good candidates to practice on, so I don't mess up the Le Grelot.

Now I have few strops, hones, razors... And still I understand that I want to have razors from all countries where they where manufactured, I'm already have USSR, USA, Germany and French razors.. So I'm still looking for the UK, Spain, Japan, Sweden etc razors... and you know you will always find something to by and you will have 1000 fact why you need excactly this particular item and can't live with out it.
