Being as it came from your great-grandfather, PLEASE set it aside until you have practiced restoring other razors, or send it out for professional restoration.
First restorations have a tendency to be botched, and I'd hate to see a good heirloom razor get ruined.

Haven't done anything with the razor except light cleaning with oil & 0000 steel wool, which made the wording "Rancoon" clear, as well as "W R Hudgins, Norfolk, Va". Interestingly, it did expose a metal mark of a rifle with strap, which shows in this photo, in case anyone knows about "maker's marks" for razors. Attachment 98256
