I am getting Grandpa's straight!!
I stumbled around an antique shop today looking for some razors to restore and found a few interesting pieces but the sellers thought they had something really amazing...and I didn't.
Anyway, my dad, upon hearing me speak of this, mentioned that his dad used to have a straight. Moments later he called his brother who could not understand WTF I would possibly want it. An hour later his brother called back to report he found it and it's in the mail.
I'm pretty stoked. It's probably going to be a rusty wreck of an 80 year old cheap razor...but it's family history...and I'm going to bring it back to life (I hope)!
I am getting Grandpa's straight!!
Thanks for sharing my excitement. I have restored 3 so far that I got from a friend's grandfather.
I'm not a pro, but I am happy with the restore jobs I did. I hope to be able to restore this one also, and keep it in the family (though I have already learned that he routinely sent it out for honing as he could not seem to keep it sharp).
I also learned that he broke at least one strop on my uncle's backside, so perhaps he was not kind to his razor either.
Regardless, I plan to give it a much less exciting generation to live through.
Rest assured, I will be sharing pictures and updates...be they good, bad, or ugly;)
Re: I am getting Grandpa's straight!!
I know your excitement. When my uncle heard about my "hobby", he passed on his grandfather's straight (my great-grandfather). As an added bonus, he threw in his barber's hone. After a little Mother's and some time with the hones, it is one of my best shavers. Just an old '30s era Shumate but it just makes the whole routine something special. And, since the modest here is "if there's no pics, it didn't happen"........
