Am I Going Mad ?

About 10 weeks ago, my son convinced me to go to a barberwith him for a straight razor shave. The barber used a disposable blade for hygienicpurposes and when we were done I told my son that in the “olden days” they used“real blades”. That night we got curious, did some research and within a fewdays bought our first razor on Ebay for $37 dollars. I had it shipped right to Larryat Whipped Dog and he sharpened it for me (and gave me great advice - what anice man).

Anyway, our first shaved were a bit sloppy. A few extrawhiskers left here and there.. a few slices of flesh (nothing serious.. in factI get the idea of not even feeling the blade now). Anyway, we have gotten prettygood with the razor and enjoy the shave so I suspect we are converts.

At the same time, I have this never ending urge to cruise theweb at night and see what’s out there. As of today, we have three straights. ATennis, Boker & Fredrick Reynolds. I am now shopping for Lapping Film so Ican try to hone the new razors on my own.

My family thinks I am strange (not just because of this new hobby) but now they think I havegone mad. My wife recently told a friend of my new hobby and made her smilewhen she saif her dad only used a straight and she will never give it up nowthat he is gone J

Anyway, I thought I would post some pics of our razors andget some feedback from the other nuts out there. I wanted some variation…. Herethey are:

Yep, you have the disease. Those "acquisition snakes" bite deeply and cause terrible yearning for more stuff.

Well? Yes.

I measure my stuff by the pound. Sharpton measures his by the ton.

Once you get all those razors together, you'll probably want to use them. You can send 'em out or buy a few hones, learn to use them, and enjoy another aspect of this addiction.

well.. the one Larry at Whipped Dog honed is great,. the others actually take the beard off right to the skin but leave me feeling scraped so I need to have them honed. I will try it with the lapping film.. if if fail - off to Larry they go !

I think a nice inexpensive barber hone would be just the ticket for you. Same idea as the lapping film, but a little more likely to work out the way you want. You can probably find one for about the same cost. Good idea as far as sending the challenging stuff out to be honed for a while as you get up to speed with shaving.

Sounds like you're well on your way :D

Oh, and Larry is a good guy. I used one of his brushes today.

Reason I measure my stuff by the pound is so when the wife says "HOW MANY OF THOSE THINGS DO YOU HAVE NOW?" I respond with "oh about thirty or so I guess." ;)

A fine-grained barber hone will put a nice edge on an _almost-sharp_ blade. They're not "grit rated", but the coarse ones are rumored to be about 6K. The "Almagamite" hone I have is certainly finer than my Norton 8K, and is very handy.

I've also used lapping film. If you can get it fine enough, and put it on a flat surface, it'll do a nice job. I think 5 / 2 / 1 micron film would be a good progression.

My wife thought I was strange too when I started getting into SR shaving last month and she saw what I was buying. Here's one conversation that we recently had after I opened a mailed box I received from an online purchase:

Wife: What's that?

I caught RAD last weekend and went from 1 razor to 10... Now to get them shave ready:) this is going to be fun. welcome, and you are in good company as there are a lot of new guys here as well as old timers. My wife's response when she got home from being out of town last weekend (now you see why last weekend i bought 9 razors hehe) and i asked her if she was upset that i bought a bunch of old razors was "no, now i don't feel guilty about all the clothes i bought!"

If you stay under 25$ a razor,including shipping, it's a healthy hobby.

Welcome to the madness. Its a fun hobby. Becareful HAD can be more costly than RAD. This is a fantastic site to have joined in the begining of your journey. TONS of info and helpful people. Dont be afraid to ask just dont ask what it might be worth.

Welcome, it is nice you have your son to share the addiction with, soon your friends who think you are mad....will be calling you because they found an old blade in a drawer, garage sale, antique shop etc. Enjoy

I got into SRs a couple of months ago. Shortly afterwards, all I can find myself doing is reading and looking at pictures of soap, razors, brushes and aftershaves. Now I have more possessions in my bathroom than my wife does hehe

Weird? Hmm.. I think she stopped evaluating my mental state somewhere between starting to collect fountain pens and picking up pipe smoking. Oh and I got a hat and I want to learn horseback riding.

Recent victim of RAD myself.. i just dont have the funding to buy more razors :'( been unemployed for 3 months

If its not to much to ask, can you get a good picture of your blades engravings? im a total engraving/beautifully crafted blade whore..
Im looking at getting my next razor if i can sell some of my Paracord 1pt. gun slings.. I want a Damascus Steel razor!!! SO BAD. . . no money sucks..
I sit here on the forum and ebay looking at razors, find one i LOVE .. and this is all i can do ---> :aargh: <--- cause i have no fundage

(Here is a Damascus Steel razor.. I think they are the most beautiful out there, maybe you can pick one up )

Once a razor acquisitioner always a razor acquisitioner, it does ocasionaly go into remission.

A few months ago I decided to sell about 20 razors to thin the heard. I've bought at least 30 more since...I'm sick too.

One of the selling points I give SWMBO'd is all the money we'd save.
Now, 3 months in I have 4 razors (not many according to most here) and a bunch of aftershave bottles.
When we sat down to talk about it all, she laughed and said something to the effect of; "Since when does any money saving hobby you start ACTUALLY save us money??"

I'm lucky that she supports my RAD...or doesn't say much about it at any rate.

This really is a fantastic hobby and a terrific community to share knowledge and prideful possessions.
I'm really glad I'm connected to everyone here.

I just counted the razors I have that I am going to restore, 36 is the number. I have already done about 2 dozen. Told the wife I have to stop buying til all these are restored. In the next second I said I only needed 1 more DD for a 7 day set.....
