Hi guys,
Just wanna ask your opinion on whether you put initial on the razors that you really like?
Would it be considered as a sacrilege and ruin it for the next person/ generation or it'll add character to it?
Have you bought/ would you buy razors with initials on it?

Every once in awhile I get one that has initials on it. It's usually one of the first things I remove if possible. If the razor is in immaculate condition, yet has initials, then I may leave them in order to keep the razor unmolested. But I personally would never put my initials on a razor. If I wanted my name on it, then I'd pay someone to etch my full name on custom scales. And resign the razor to a whole different class of worthless collectible(except within the family I'd hope).
I don't think it's sacrilege. But I think it was more necessary when everybody had a straight, and there were multiple shaving males in a household, or working at the barber shop.
Anyways, no...If I really liked a razor, that's about the last thing I'd want to do to it.

I know the guys at Hart steel put their initials on the tang of their razors after they are done completing a razor. But they have personally crafted that razor from start to finish. Maybe on the scales if you have made them, but I dont know about on the razor itself. I kind of see that as ruining a piece of history. But, it is your razor and you can do whatever you want with it. Im sure others will give you their opinion. Thats just my opinion.
I don't know about razors, but I like it when I find initials on the inside of scales of restores for other people. It's kind of cool, especially since the handwriting from days gone by is much different from our scribing of today. Sometimes I've even seen years. It's a cool feeling when you se X*X 1927 on the inside of a set of horn.
I personally wouldn't but I do have a few DD's that have an initial on them. I believe this was from the days men kept their straight at the barber shop, to avoid confusion with others.
I'd never put my initial on the razor :cool:

I have some old STR8S with the names of various owners scribbled on the horn scales. If they were well done I would have probably liked them and seen them as interesting, but they look like carved with a knife point, so I deem these scales as nothing particular. On the contrary, I could find a strop with an ivory handle with my initials wonderfully carved on it, and I absolutely had to get it when I saw it. So my advice is that if you want to carve your initials, you better make a real nice work! :)

I might never have thought of it, but my girlfriend surprised me with a Brian Brown Custom for my birthday last month--she had Brian put my last name on it. I was touched (on many levels) at the thoughtfulness of the gift, and having it bear my name is special.
Now, I still wouldn't put my initials on any of my other blades. But on a custom like this it seems OK for some reason. I mainly prefer the maker's marks to be honored.

Nope, I can't see the purpose it's not like I'm going to loose it somewhere, they are in my bathroom so who else sees the razors.
No I would not put my name on any of my razors. Any razors I have at my passing will be in my estate and the ones my son may not want would be sold by my wife.
I recall this subject came up on a fountain pen forum I used to frequent. I'd do it on new scales, but I would try not to much around with a vintage razor too much. As far as I'm concerned I'm just looking after them at the moment until someone else takes over...
I would never add my initials or name to something I didn't use myself.
If I see a used one with initials on it it adds value in my opinion. I wonder who H.S. or J Johnson was. It brings an inanimate object to life.
My initials might lower the value though...

I usually place my name on my travel items. Not that I would expect to get them back if taken, I do it just to inspire guilt in the person who took them.
Never thought about it until I saw your thread. Hmmm, I guess it might be cool to have my initials somewhere on the tang if I ever get a custom.... Now that's food for thought!
If only I had a cool name like Birnando, now that razor looks seriously cool mate with the funky font and everything.... Doubt it would look as good with 'Ash' inscribed.....Quote:

I don't see an issue with it. Unless of course you're in the habit of flipping razors on a constant basis, then it could pose a problem. But if you intend to keep a particular razor for life why not initial it so it can be passed on to sons and grandsons and be a reminder of the old man? After all, these pieces of steel will still be around long after all of us are gone.

Thanks for the input guys...maybe it's a good idea to do it properly and pass the razor down as family heirloom. So far I've yet to have a son....lucky for u guys who have...

I can see why but I won't unless later on when I have a family all the men are shaving with one. On the other hand, my newest razor did come with a name scrawled on the inside of the scales.
