Some razors better shavers?

One should realize such a list is highly subjective. This is a personal preference thing for me. For those who have honed and tested hundreds or thousands of razors such a list is substantiated through experience.

Very frequently, when a group starts touting online the virtues of some particular razor as their favorite the traffic in those razors multiplies and the exponentially minded appraisals of Ebay result in foolish runaway price increases.

There seems to always be some vaunted "magic" razor brand bringing high prices based more on demand fueled by speculation than function.

It isn't good practice as a result of these factors to post "lists" of good razors anymore than it is good practice to post your interest in a currently available auction item.

Do some research...........pay attention to what others keep in their rotations. Surf the shave of the day thread. Also check out the razors to avoid list on SRP.

It is akin to a travel writer expounding on the virtues of his latest out of the way destination discovery........which soon isn't so out of the way.

Buy some inexpensive razors explore and then return here to tell us the about the "magic razors" you have found.

I had a Joseph Elliot razor I test shaved completely...shaved fine...something about it didn't agree with my face...it was a 7/8 probably from 1850's...it was a heavy blade...but even compared to my full wedge...felt "not right" somehow...tough to explain

There is no WOW brands, as Glen said there can be WOW razors from any brand it is just a matter of luck finding one.
No need to create hype about brands, there is plenty going around already.

the very first straight i got which was with a bunch of DE razors, a rusty, sad looking, neglected ACRON, cleaned it up a bit, but it will never win a prize for good looks. Probably owes me $4. Used it to practice honing, and it gives a real good shave. Since then i have watched Filarmonica, Wade and Butcher, Dubl Duck, and other razors go for huge money on e-bay, especially anything an inch plus. But hey, if you got the money, why not? Do they shave any better? One would hope so. It would be nice to own a bunch of razors like that. If you look in the Custom Builts and Restorations forum, there are examples of members work that are totally inspiring.I suspect alot of them are lower end e-bay purchases, combined with large amounts of elbow grease. If you look past the hype, there are plenty of good razors to be had without breaking the bank.

What pixelfixed is true. The prufe is in the pricing. They're outrageously expensive so they must be outrageously good!

Fads come and go, hype flourishes and fades, and pricing follows accordingly.

If you've found an interesting blade at an antique store, write down a few notes about it then search SRP for any mentions of the brand. That's probably the quickest way to research it.

if you want to find a WOW razor I'll tell you the secret:
start with quality materials and highly trained workers, make sure the razor wasn't made on a Monday or a Friday, make sure the worker was feeling really good, make sure he didn't have a fight with his wife that morning or have some unpleasant experience,make sure the entire fabrication process was 150% perfect from raw material to final honing and stropping and even packaging.

take all that and mix it together and you have yourself a WOW razor. So now just go find one.
