Maher & Grosh ID help

I bought this razor because it looked special. It is a Maher & Grosh, with an asymmetrical grind. I've not seen this before. Was this an uncommon thing to do? Aside from the Western Kamisori's, which this is clearly not, I am not familiar with it. The razor had some pitting issues and I was not sure it would come around, but it turns out to be an excellent shaver. It is labeled, 'Our Master Piece' Specially Ground For Private Use. Thanks in advance for the help.

IIRC I have a couple of razors ground like that. I always thought it was an off day at the plant when they were made. Doesn't seem to make a difference in the shave though.

Yeah, not sure it's really asymmetrical just a result of being hand made. I have some that look off on the toe like that.

Yes, A nice one! Seems they ground the grob tilted. Makes for more of an illusion than anything.

I looked at it quite a bit because I thought it was an illusion, or perhaps I was seeing something that really wasn't apparent to anyone else. It is a bit asymmetric though.....or perhaps I should stare at it until it isn't!

Not trying to belittle it but I think it is what I would consider a second grade. Not perfect.

This would be a good example to use for the tape/no tape argument for changing the angle while honing.

Does it shave different with the show side or the other?

I've only shaved with it twice, but either side shaves equally well. Second grade, or not, it is a bit of a curiosity made by a reputable manufacturer back in the day. It has bovine scales as well.

On a completely different note, nice group on the NFAA blue face, all though I would have obscured the couple shots in the 3 ring.

AFAIK, Mayher and Grosh were sellers. I don't know who might have made them, but I suspect an American company or two?

Anyhoo, Don't get too worried about all that on the oldies.

Condition is everything. Warts and all!

It is what it is and I did not mean any offence. Why would it be made that way on purpose? And if it shaves good on either side that throws a wrench into the tape/no tape angle changing theory for a loop.

Regarding my avatar, I was having a bad day at the club shooting a 5 spot and a guy a few lanes over quit for the day leaving his target up.

Mu hunting bow using Goldtip prohunter arrows at 20 yds. 5X and didn't even wreck a knock!

Took a picture and called a day!

Remember and quit when things are good!
