ID/Information

Picked this up at a thrift market yesterday, it's 11/16, full hollow with bone scales, she was in pretty good condition, all I have done to her is to clean and lightly sand and polish the scales and a light buffing to the blade.

Anyone have any information of maker etc?

I recall seeing the beehive logo, but I can't remember where/who.....

The only razors I have seen with a beehive are Slater Brothers, but I am pretty sure it is not a logo, just a blade etch - I think it looks more like a beehive than this one too. No idea on this one sorry Rune.

In 1911, they sold this trademark to "Alfred Marples & Co", then "Marples & Co". The owner was Alfred Marples from Sheffield.
But after all, the razor is marked "Solingen", not Sheffield.

Samuel Hoppe, Solingen-Merscheid used a beehive trademark. But I think, it's not the same.

The company was founded in about 1840s. And Samuel Hoppe was unable to survive the hard times of the period 1875-85. So, the company was closed.

It is a 'skep' type beehive - the old-fashioned kind made from a thick, coiled rope, but it is not the Slater/Marples beehive mark:

Nor is it the Samuel Hoppe Sohne beehive (sabres/swords/bayonets c.1840s, same mark acquired by Ferdinand Hoppe making same wares c.1860s-70s with, surprisingly, an outlet in London):

Nor is it the beehive of Solingen cutler Emil Gustav Maus, (although at least the date is much more suitable, c.1930s-40s:

which leaves one other cutler mentioned by the online pdf of German Cutlers, Toolmakers and Metal Smiths as using a beehive trademark - Max Hief. Unfortunately he used a number of marks including a sailor, blue jacket, and boxer which I have been able to find, but not the beehive mark.

Not that any online reference is exhaustive - it may well be another makers mark, even an importers mark

I got this razor from a friend and remembered this thread. I scaled in camel bone and acrylic. I don't think the maker of the blade Zephyr has in the OP was positively IDed. This blade is different with the blade etching. Tried Google translation with no success.

I got a good, close shave with it so it was worth the work to get it functional.

Any help is appreciated. The razor goes to Scott Goodman, a well known train engineer.

The etching reads, in Swedish:

Swedish Magnet steel
5 years warranty

I recently also found a razor by that maker. Marked 444 with a etching in German on the blade.
