How To Part With A Razor....What To Do!!!!

When I first started using a straight razor I had one and I thought I should get another incase my first needed a touch up or if something happened to it so I got two. Then I figured why not have one for each day of the week so I got 7. Then I figured I could have 2 7 day sets and that would cut down on touch ups and so forth. Well then I thought why not one razor for every day of the month, but I decided no I didn't think I could handle using only 1 razor once per month so I stopped at 2 7 day sets. Well onto my problem I recently got a razor that I cleaned up and honed and it took such a fabulous edge that I don't want to get rid of it, but if I keep it I will have to get rid of one of my others and I don't want to do that either. If I keep it I know I am going to have to eventually get atleast 6 more to make another 7 day set which means I will have to make another set to make it 4 7 day sets since you can't just have 3 7 day sets. Needless to say I don't really want that many, but I don't want to get rid of any of the ones I have or the one I just honed up. What to do.... Guess my question is how does everyone part with a razor that they don't want to or should I just make another 7 day set. :(

7 day set!!!! Even if you sold this one you would get another later on down the line. Its such an addiction. You have inspired me... My goal is to now get a set for each day of the month!

If you send me one of your seven-day sets then you can start a whole new set with the one that you just honed:) Think of all the possibilities of new razors you can have.

But in reality I would pick the one that I look forward to using the least. I'm still new at this but I already know which ones I prefer and the others don't get used nearly as often. Or you could go with natural selection and whichever one gets dull first that's the one that goes.

As a sidenote how is your OCD therapy going? Jk Jk :)

Like anything else in life just resign to do it. Whether you keep it or get rid of it, just make the choice and stick by it.
Getting rid of a razor in this point...put it in the classifieds and know that some one will truly benefit from it as well. Or perhaps give it as a gift to someone you might be mentoring.
Decisions to part with things are tough but try to see the benefits of getting rid of it.
If you do keep it try not to let it burden you by trying to add more to a collection only because it seems like you don't want anymore of them.

LOL you guys are no help and to think at one point I was actually considering one for each day of the year. I guess I will have to keep it then. New 7 day set is in my future I guess. Sad thing is I have quite a few razor sitting on the back burner waiting to be restored so I guess it won't be to hard to make another set. 365 here I come.

Well...You could always use a travel razor in your collection. No sense taking one from your 7 day set. Solves that problem! ;-)

I'm just as OCD as you, and had/have the EXACT same problem. 2 razor rolls, each with one pristine example of each of the popular old razor makers...of course, pristine usually equals BIG, so I have about 10 9/8 razors in there, lol.

Here's the trick...keep only the best! And if a better one comes your way, get rid of your most inferior one. FYI, your allowed only ONE razor that you keep strictly for its fantastic edge... Put it in its own case so you don't have to get another 7 set set :)

There are quite a few of guys here who have 100+ razors, I was one of them...why do you have to get rid of it or have a "set"?

For me, I would give up razors that wouldn't take the edge I have become accustomed to. Not that they were bad razors, just not the ones I wanted.

Save yourself the trouble and just give up trying to fool yourself.

I tried this too, said to myself I would only have 7 razors then you take one small step aside and find just one more to keep and before you know it you find yourself running towards a full year set :)

This is a wonderful thread. Cause I cant part with a single blade I ever bought. I bought bucket loads of razors at an alarming pace. I never thought of ever selling them even some of the doubles. I couldn't dream of letting them go. Its an impossible thing for me to do.
I never squirreled away anything in my life until straights entered the picture. The hoarding is at about 120 by now.
When you rip out all the dinnerware in the china closet cause its the largest area to display your blades. You have a problem.

It is better to give than to receive. Give one of your razors to a good friend or family member. It will pay back in ways you won't expect. It may also give you an opportunity to mentor someone, which is always rewarding for you. Also, giving someone a razor does not mean you can't get another, and another...

The bad thing is that every razor I come across takes a wonderful edge, but this one has to be up there with the few that have taken fantastic edges and I hate getting rid of any of them. I just don't want to end up with so many that I can only shave with them once per year since I like using each one. I guess though if it comes to that there really isn't anything I can do about it. The only reason I think I get rid of any of the ones I do is so I can get more to restore. I find the hobby of restoring them as rewarding as shaving with them. To be honest I have a few already sitting around waiting to be restored that I am pretty sure are going to be hard to get rid of so I might as well make another 7 day set. I'm sure I will eventually make a 365 day set and ofcourse leave one on the side for those leap years, but hopefully that is in the distant future.

I have one proper 7 day...and then a display case I will make a "all-star" 7 day...five razors in there and two slots to go. I already know what kind of razor is going in one...other razors will have to fight over the last spot. Then I'm done.

Or should I say...then all star brushes, hones, strops...

This is the big reason i don't brother reselling razors i get at a steal.
Trying to make a choice as to which one you do't mind parting with is impossible
when it's all nice treasure.

Going out on a limb here, but have you considered the possibility of donating it to the Monthly-Giveaway as a way to thanking those who have helped you and the prospect of helping a new member get started. Just a thought.

I know what you mean. I've only got 7 but there's another awaiting fixing up, and one living with my brother and one with my older son.

I see so many more nice ones (and someone's got to look after them) that I can't resist taking the little orphans in. And you can't SELL an orphan you've taken in; so they go to stay with relatives in the city for a while.

Later, when the other razors are older, they will go away to the city, but for now they call me 'papa'...

A year ago I had maybe 130 razors,no less than 10 seven day sets putting me at about 200,25 strops,all sorts of hones,brushes,just a bunch of stuff I never used.
I had an entire room with display cases of razors and boxes (I have a thing for orig boxes:) ebayed almost everything except my best users,you just have to quit buying razors,but I still like to look for them:)

It's already paid for, throw it in a box in the attic and save it for the next generation.

If I could stop buying them I would, but I like the idea of taking something that has been sitting in a box in an attic, garage, basement or wherever for countless years and bringing them back to usable condition and using them for what they were made for. That is why I don't think I could stick it in a box and store it away. Most of my razors probably spent more time in a box than being used before I got them. I think eventually I will weed out some of my other ones, but for now I guess I will end up with another 7 day set. I was looking at the razor waiting to be restored and I found 4 more to go with this one so won't take long. :gaah:

You have to get rid of razors so you don't wind up with 100+ razors for 2 reasons:
1. us young guys are working for peanuts these days, and we can't justify having all our money tied up in razors :)
2. those of us with OCD need to own razors in special order... if we have a 7 day razor roll, we need a razor in each spot. If we have a case, every spot in the case must be filled. No more, no less. If we have 2 seven day sets in our rolls, buying a new razor means...we need to buy another roll, and get 6 more razors to fill it, and spend more money than we should in the process...

Starting to understand now? Its MADNESS! :y
