My New (to me) Ugly Duck
So I got this ugly little duckling, thought it couldnt hurt and hit the surface rust with some 0000 steel wool,.. even on the scales, but i believe it will need more work then I think i should probably tackle for a first time attempt at a restore, but well i have it so here are some pics,... and If I can come up with a safe way to remove the scales without breaking them, i may try to at least get the blade back to a nice shine, then let it be honed and pinned by someone with knowledge on how to do so and save my learnign for something else

You've got your hands full with that one, but your making progress, take your time on her, good luck.

Thanks, It may be a bit much for me though,... I may just leave it be for the time being and let someone else do it for me lol
-
You can always leave it for yourself, at a later time, when you have learned a bit more about restoration.
She may turn out to be a diamond in the rough.

Looks like cell rot in the first set of pics. Might want to ditch those scales.
-
I agree that it looks like cell rot. If that is the case the scales are going to continue to rust the blade so they should be thrown out. Alot of Dubl Duck scales seem to have that problem. Rather sad too since I always like the look of those scales.

Son of a gun, i really liked these scales to,... cell rot is new to me, so your saying that the scales are causing the heavy corrosion on the blade in that area ?, i thought it was just put away wet and got caught in there, wow that is disheartening indeed
-
Yeah, you need to ditch those scales pronto my friend. BUT, you CAN save all the little pretties on it. Check out some of the custom work around here. There's some pretty talented guys that can take all the appurtances off the old duck and make em fit like brand new on a different set of scales. :) I'm not yet one of those guys, but someday maybe. lol.

well thats good news,... if thats the case ill bust off the scales and take a shot at sanding the duck to a shine myself
