How long do you guys think it takes before its time to re hone your razor?
The short answer is 'how long is a piece of string?'
As with most things in this hobby of ours YMMV.
One slip on a strop and you may need to hone the razor again.
OTOH it may last many months before a touch up is needed.
Most of mine have never been touched up 'cause I keep restoring new ones to add to the rotation. (and I never keep count of how many shaves they have done anyway).
When the blade starts to pull and tug a little is an indication that it needs some work - probably not much though.
I hope this helps
Yeah I think it depends on too many different variables for us to even hazard a guess. Some new guys can't make it through a single shave without needing a rehone. Some veterans are using razors they honed a few years ago. My longest lasting edge is going on 9 months now, but so far as I can tell, it's not the least in need. Then other guys have super thick beards, and say they rehone about once a week. Which seems nuts to me, but hey..I'm not them. So how do I know what their razors need? lol Just for kicks, I'll throw out a guess of six months of daily shaving before a touchup is needed. But I'll never know, because I never use the same razor more than twice a week. :p
Airportcopper,
I usually will give a razor a touch up on a CrOx dusted hard leather paddle after ca. seven (7) shaves. After ca. twenty-eight (28) shaves I will give it a touch up on my 12k Naniwa 12k SS.
Using this 'little & often' approach, I can go around about a year before I will give a razor a full re-hone. Whether the razor really needs the full re-hone is another matter - it just makes things tidier for me :)
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
