Sheffield razor works visited (well, sort of!)

Went to Sheffield today to do a bit of sightseeing on my day off, the vast majority of places of manufacture are no longer there but I managed to take a few photos, John heiffors old place at 3 paradise square...Attachment 110777

Joseph Rodgers and sons site at Norfolk street is no longer there but there is a small plaque on the side of a grubby bingo hall which is now where the rogers place used to be. Quite sad really..Attachment 110779Attachment 110780

I'd love to go there someday as my ancestors came from about 70 miles from Sheffield. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever been to the Butcher Works on Arundel Street. It have been converted into a multi-use building and looks really good. I'm planning on visiting it when we are back there on vacation next year. Here is a link to the website:

Yes, the butcher works is still there, like you said they are all offices now but there's a nice archway as you enter. It's a grade 2 listed building. Apparently in the 1860's some trade unions in Sheffield used a lot of violence against non members, known as the 'Sheffield outrages' and razor makers and the like flocked there to work because it was a safe place and access to the butcher works was only through a single door as you enter the works,which was heavily guarded at the time. There's huge black iron gates at the entrance in arundel street. I couldn't decide weather they were to keep unpleasant people out, or the workers in after hearing what the conditions where like!! The museum at jel ham island is well worth a look too, it's right opposite the globe steel works.

Great pics of butcher works btw, I couldn't get that far in. Glad they didn't just level it like many other great cutler factories..

Someone else did this a few months back. As I recall they said the primary employer there now is the Govt.

George Wostenholm's house is also now a nice and relatively affordable hotel. I haven't been there (my plans to visit Sheffield are a few years off yet), but I've read a fair bit about it. Supposedly when it was first reopened the Butcher Works was a mixed use residential/commercial structure. They found one of the original grinding hulls while refurbishing it, and I think it's preserved.
