I would like to try a kamisori but find the $300 average price for the highly rated makes overwhelming. Does anyone have advice on how to try a good quality razor without going overboard?

Will PM you. I have a Hart Steel kamisori.
Hart Steel sells or sold them.

I would just keep your eyes peeled for a deal... I think everyone goes an a kamisori binge once in a while.. But, they are an aquired taste so I wouldn't spend too much on the first one... Ionly use mine every so often.. And out of all three I like the oldest one the best.. I got it off a guy named "Dom" on ebay... He is on this site also.
Thanks. Maybe six nipples and can dicker or I'll find something in classified. I am already struggling with acquisition disorder and want to be careful not to open another vein to it. Fat chance, eh?
The Hart is one of those frankenrazors. Not a kamisori and not a Western razor. There are many out there like that.
it just means since the OP said he wanted to try a kamisori the hart is not a kamisori.
I agree. There is a nice guy named Telly, his nick on B&B is TstebinsB, I think he's on this forum also?! He hooked me up with my kamisori and I can highly recommend him. I think he's well known on both forums and I hope he won't mind that I mentioned him by name.
Never had any issues with telly, but he is totaly out of the loop at this time.
Just gonna jump on the end of this thread, rather than start a whole new one.
Does anyone know how much the currently out of stock kamisori on theinvisibleedge.co.uk are?
If your talking about what their prices where... here is a snapshot of their page; NEW! Belgian razor hones
If you can't wait they are currently available at japanwoodworker.com and japanesenaturalstones.com and here: RasurPur Online Store - The finest tools for a perfect shave
I think japanwoodworker has the best price, even on some Japanese sites it's around 320$ -350$ so this might be old stock, I would expect higher prices once new stock arrives to Europe and US, but maybe I'm wrong.
Dicktum got em too; Japanisches Rasiermesser | DICTUM GmbH - Mehr als Werkzeug
Dictum! I must remember that, I din't know about this site till now.

JNS has the best price if you're outside EU, you don't pay 25% tax. Aframestokyo also has some models, but not 50 mm one.
Thanks chaps! I'm in no rush to spend that amount of money right now but i would like a kamisori--it is a very nice razor and I'm very tempted...
Why not get an old one, I've got a few and they are lovely!
aframestokyo is out of the standard 50mm now, but seem to still have the 45 as well as some other options. They've got a tamahagane Iwasaki up now too.
That's a good idea. I might have a look around!
I picked up a kami on ebay as an Xmas present. Name was Yujimary, I believe he's a new maker, but it's a pretty decent blade. I don't see any listed right now.
There's a Teramasa on ebay right now:

There is also one new maker named Kanenaga, his kamisoris look very nice and can be found on the bay. He is 60-smth years old and used to make scissors, there are couple of good reviews arround the forums.. I have a Teramasa (tamahagane) and it's also great.
Could be, I've also seen these kamis on Rakuten and they look very similar.. I didn't notice the difference in spelling until you pointed it out.
Actually taking a good look at both, Kanetaga (at aframes) looks to be a better kami for the price. Looks nicer and you're right about the Tosuke influence. But that's just my opinion. (+Takeshi at aframes is a relly nice guy)
i believe Kanenaga, when he switched from scissor-making, learned from a smith who made for Henkotsu; im lookin at a new one from him if i can get this ol' Henkotsu here sharp enough to shave me
aargh searching using 'kamisori' gets beauty products on Rakuten .. razor or Japanese razor aint any better
