hey guys,
It's Mike again. Getting more and more excited for Christmas to come since that's when I'll be getting all my new straight razor stuff and I can start enjoying straight razor shaving. I have a question though if you could buy any razor well with a $250 max what would it be? From classic straight shaving.com or where ever. What would it be and where do you get it. I'd scrape up another $125 and get an 8/8 giraffe-bone scaled Spanish Point from R. Williams. Those babies are hand-forged and *P*I*M*P* :nj
I'd certainly go for hand forged or mint vintage.

where do you get something like that hand forged or anything from where?
PM PapaBull and start discussing the design. Takes about a week per razor and he does it from scratch including the heat-treatment.
I've got one of his hand-forged razors and absolutely love it. The steel is extremely hard without a hint of brittleness and takes a really wicked edge.
That's a great idea, Ilija. Robert's stuff is really top drawer. The giraffe bone is probably the most beautiful bone I've seen. Stag for horn. They both just colours so nicely.
But for me I'd have to go for the wood scales. Perhaps some ancient kauri. That stuff looks enchanted. It might be coming from middle earth and all. :D

I would probably hunt up an 8 or 9/8 W&B wedge, as close to mint as possible, and put a set of flamed maple scales with a PRS guitar finish on them. :D Oh, and then I'd build a shrine for it in my bathroom. :roflmao
Personally, for $250 I'd snap up a couple of the 6/8 C.F. Schmidt Revisors that John Crowley has on sale and have money left over for a first class 3" strop from HandAmerican or Tony Miller, whatever other honing/finishing gear you might need, or a nice shaving brush.
It depends on your preferences at this stage, getting started, whether you'd prefer a couple of excellent razors to work with or save up some more money for a superb custom blade and scales.
I am looking for that special razor to and I had +/- the same question on mind. The hand forged razor is it possible to see one of those beauties and by the way what kind of steel is he using?

I'd say get about five more good shave ready vintage Razors in varying shapes and grinds, leave the custom work for when you really know what you like.

I'm not 100% on the type of steel but he double-tempers them (a page out of Filly's book lol) to your specs on a scale from Zeepk to 63-64HRC.. I'd choose the latter, ofcourse :D

Yesterday was the best day to find another something to do...
I've been getting e-bay specials and working on them myself, thus spending $10 a pop. Now that I have a decent rotation going, I'd rather focus on really nice ones, like a Bill Ellis' Big Dipper, Robert Williams' Spanyard or an olivewood-scaled Lido Livi.
However I'll have a custom job from every SRP member that makes'em before I even consider a Livi, unless Lido and Luca decide to join and contribute :D

Livi will wait for you Ilija......hahahahahaha......you can even have the handle material, handle shape and blade shape and width you desire along with your choice of either ATS 34 or Damascus (Damasteel).
Oh yeah Bill, Sta-Sharp blades made for Craftsman in the pearlex handles......bootiful set.....poifect for one of Vlad's boxes. He has made me a box for both a matched set of Ivory handled Mappin & Webb's and for a matched set of Wade & Butcher Aristocrats with elongated monkey tails.

Starting out I don't think I would blow it all on one razor. You should be experimenting with different sizes and materials and grinds to find your favorites. I would buy some good quality vintage stuff from some of the guys here and then when you know what you prefer buy a nice custom for the big bucks.

During the first week of January I shall be listing a few mint, custom scaled razors and they won't be $250. :D
