Advice on purchasing a razor

Hello everyone-I'm looking for advice on purchasing a razor as a gift. My husband recently began shaving with a straight razor with disposable blades and would like to graduate to a "real" razor. I'd like to find something with a little history that also is nice quality. I've found the following one on ebay, any advice on this one or pointers on something else to look for would be greatly appreciated. I know next to nothing about this!

Thank you all for your feedback, I do appreciate it and will research the resources you've given. I have about 6 weeks to find a nice one. I will continue to inform myself as much as possible and may ask more questions along the way!

+1 to not buying from eBay. I'm also a complete newbie and purchased a straight from eBay a very short while ago. While I think I did quite well with the purchase, I have already learnt enough to recognise that that was complete luck.

I just purchased a "sight unseen" razor from whippeddog.com. I've only heard good things about this service. The most important thing is that it comes shave ready, which means you need not try and learn honing and shaving at the same time (apparently a very bad idea).

The classifieds also seem like a great idea, but I happened to be ordering from whippeddog.com anyway.

I'd like to keep it below $300. I'm interested in a restored antique if possible rather than a new one. I'd love one that has some engraving or mother of pearl or something but my main concerns are that it is high quality and well restored.

If you have a $300 ceiling on your budget I suggest SRP classifieds. I have seen very nice razors recently.

I suggest the SRP classifieds. And I suggest getting a pre restored or new razor before getting in to restoring them yourself. That way you know how it should feel/look. Good luck!
